Should I go for a new car

so I should be good if the installment is something like R5k at the most.

Assuming you get an 11% interest rate (due to age), you will need to take the car over 60 months for you to achieve a 5K install.
60 months is way to long; your fancy GTi will be outdated during the 2nd year of your installments.

Although you are earning 8K more, you only come home with an extra 6K or so. Take that extra 6K and save for a house - you won't regret it.

Buying a NEW car is never a good idea is SA. Our prices are even more ludicrous than the rest of the world and they depreciate so fast that in 4-5 years it will be worth a quarter of what you paid. Probably less from all the VROOOOMING into trees and pavements and then doing poor repair jobs since you can't afford the excess payment to get it fixed properly.

This.

But I can imagine what OP is thinking: "Why save for a house now? I can start doing that in two years which means two salary increases further. If I don't increase my expenses all that extra money can be saved". Unfortunately, it never works that way :(

His 23! Of course he want to go vroooooom! But that insurance is crazy though! By the way, what job let's u double your salary within a year?

This is the NEW South Africa my man. Is not about what you know is about who you know and are . . . WTF Judging by the feedback from the OP I wonder if all this replies will ever be read.

Its hard to admit but you all right!!!!!!!!! My head had the exact same issues you guys raise but my heart was wishing for something like "You only live once buddy go 4 it!!!!!!!". Ima wait a year or 2 to climb tht corporate ladder Ill get there

I have the same dilemma as you OP. 23, promoted, wanted to buy a Audi S3. I ended up buying a flat instead. Much better in the long run. I'm happy with my corsa for now

Yes, listen to your elders my boy. We have been there and done that already. Remember the adage: A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush. What you were looking at before we put you straight was: The grass is greener on the other side of the fence.

Wait until you are taking home R30k a month, have your own house or flat well paid for, then think of the boys toys. If you get R5m from a rich uncle, this is another story. When my rich uncle died he left most of his money to the Cancer Foundation

YOU got a promotion for YOUR hard work!
why do you want to give it all to your CAR now?

rather stick with your polo 1.6... and enjoy your life man! travel, explore, spoil yourself..
life's too short to waste your hard earned cash on a car- especially at your age!

Yes, you only live once. So don't screw it up with bad choices.

#YOLO

But yea good advice in this thread. Don't fall into the trap of falling deeper into debt the more money you make :)

You have a pretty reliable car - keep it. If the GTI's insurance isn't going to kill you, the fuel bill will (trust me, you're 23... it will).

Do yourself a favour - phone VW, ask them how much a 60 000 km oil change for a DSG transmission is then come back here and tell us whether you still think it's a good idea.

You are already driving a car that is costing you too much (and its the wrong brand).

How much are you putting away for your retirement? Should you plan to purchase a place to say how do you plan to pay the deposit? Buying cars is a bad idea, especially with the way things are looking right now with fuel and insurance costs skyrocketing. Rather save more by putting money into an RA and maybe an investment portfolio of some sort so that you can buy a roof over your head someday.

Oh, and loose the VAG - they are uncool.

Sorry but this is the South Africa that has always been. My mom has been living in OZ since 1980 and every time she has visited since then she has always commented how weird it is to only see new cars on the road, she has never seen a country like ours with a desire to always drive a new car and she has traveled the world.

For my Aussie 20yr old boet driving a 1980's Datsun is all the status he and his mates need.
