Should I go for a new car

Reading threads like this made me glad i went for a Getz and not the 2.0l Citroen VTS. Its nice to not struggle to make it to the end of each month. Now i just need to wait till i hit the magic age of 25 to have my insurance drop a bit :D.

R230k lol get something second hand or keep your money my boy don't be silly

Love these threads, always good for a laugh. Some people live in their little dream world...

When I was 21 I was forced to buy a car to get to work and back, because of the hours I worked. I bought a 2005 polo 1.4 for R70k. A year later I bought a VW scirocco. I am now 23 and still have the scirocco. I still enjoy the car, the only problem I have is that I got a crappy interest rate on the car. It also takes me a bit longer to save to go on euro tour or to tour the states, the plus side is that it gives me time to save up enough leave days to go on the trips. You will hear a lot of people saying its a bad choice but I'm still satisfied with the choice I made. I'm also planning on paying the car off quickly, like my bonus goes straight into the car and everytime i save a bit it goes into the car.
I'm not planning on getting married any time soon so that helps to.

Live life without regrets. get the car if you really want to but remember it's a lot of debt.

Priorities I suppose. I'm 26 currently and married. We own a house and our cars are paid off. They're not particularly new or fancy but I don't want to mess a nice car up in traffic anyway. I'm buying a Cayman in a couple of years though.

I 62, divorced for the third time, lost my house to the third wife, share a 1.5 bedroom apartment, wrecked my car which I owed R70k on. I will never own a Cayman and really love show offs like you. Hope you enjoy your glamorous life and continue to shove it into everyone's face

My car is currently worth not much more than what you owe on yours. I did buy it cash several years ago though. It's nothing to do with showing off, it's about delayed gratification. Drive the cheap car and put the 3k per month into an investment of some form. 6 years from now you're sitting in R400k or so, not to mention maintenance costs savings, cheaper insurance, etc. Hell, I was looking at BMW the other day. A basic 3 series is R400k and with fuel and insurance, it would set you back R10k per month. For that you can buy a pretty reasonable property, rent it out and pay it off in five to ten years at which point the rental income can be used to buy you that nice car.

I now owe R82k with the interest and don't have the car anymore. I also bought it cash but had to finance due to divorce. It was a cheap car too. I was putting money into investments my whole life and lost it all, that's another story. I could never look at R10k per month as I don't even earn that much. I bought a reasonable property 20 years, rented it out and the tenant burned it down. Whatever I got in insurance payouts my first wife took from me. I don't have money to put into a new property and besides in 5 to 10 years I may be dead.

Bud, you had some seriously bad luck in your life... Hope things go better for you soon.

Damn, can't keep this up anymore, you do seem like too much of a nice guy. I'm just talking crap.

Valuable life lesson though, always learn your audience and never announce your financial standing in a forum :o. On a nicer note, agree with your comments apart from the Cayman... rather get something without the roof if you're going down that road. Doubles the fun

Well, it's pretty anonymous and I don't really care if anyone knows what I earn.

Caymans come with hard tops, perhaps you're confusing them with Boxters? It'll be a second car for weekends, not a daily drive.

No, I know the Cayman very well. I am saying rather go for something that has a softtop, like a boxter. Its may more fun if you can put the roof down.

Oh misread, thought you said WITH a roof not without. It's still a few years away so not getting excited about anything just yet :)

Even when I earned double of what the OP is going to earn I still felt buying a R160k car was a bit extravagant. Yes - even after I put down a R70k deposit and it cost me R2.5k a month.

Buying cars is stupid. Owning them is unfortunately a must.

What you are saying is quite true but if you are spending 4 hours a day in your vehicle for business then it is worth while getting something decent, doesn't need to be extravagant just something with a bit of power, safety features, air con etc.

I sacrificed on a flashy car and ploughed all my money in to my property which I upgraded a couple of years ago. I'm now living in a top area in Cape Town. My friends who bought the flashy cars aren't ... and they have all sold their cars (to upgrade to better ones) at a fraction of what they paid for them.
Moral of the story - a car is a depreciating asset and you only sit in it for a couple of hours every day. A house, you live in!
