Hi All,

So a little intro and explanation for me seeking advise here. Over the last 2 years I have lost just about everything! Wife, house, car, job, friends(this by choice)...literally have nothing to my name except for lots of debt. How i lost everything is a long story and deserves a new thread all on its own, but for now lets just say, I made some bad choices and chose to relate to some people that really never had my interest at heart and used me.

Been a bit of a nomad and living with folks and with family, all depending on where work called my name. During the past 2 years I managed to find work here and there, but nothing stable and this year has been terrible as I was unemployed since Jan and only found work in May.

So at my current place of employment for just over a month, the people are great, but don't particularly like my job, it does not excite me, I have no enthusiasm for it and I just go through the paces. Needless to say, I have taken a serious pay cut to secure this position. During this time I was offered a job in CPT(oh, I am from JHB) which will be difficult as I need to secure accommodation and having no car, need to find a place close enough to work and public transport. I am by no means scared or lazy to even walk to work everyday if need be, but just being practical.

In my mind I think I should take it as it could signal a new start for me and yes it will be tough being in a place where I know very few people(old work acquaintances), but hey, I dont really associate with "friends" here. The pay is better, although not the same as before, but close enough and lots of room to grow and from what I have heard from the interviews, I think I will really enjoy it and have lots to offer.

Current girlfriend does not want me to go, also she has supported my over the last couple months so I even feel guilty. Dont want her thinking I used her(she has made it clear she does not want to leave JHB). My family is hell bent against it, saying its too risky and I struggled so long to find a job and not to throw current job away, but what do I do? Do I play it safe and be miserable and hope something comes along in JHB or do I move to CPT and while there is no guarantee there either, it seems like a better opportunity and a chance to start fresh...

I feel really weird asking people I really dont know for advise, but I have no one else who is not biased in some way to talk to.

So please share your views, no matter how harsh as I need some fresh perspective.

TIA

How secure is this job? How secure is your current job?

They probably both just as secure. Not to blow my own horn, but I am really good at what I do, and I tend to fit into any office culture quite easily.

Personally with the amount of debt you say you are in, coupled with the nomadic situation you find yourself in. I would make the move and start fresh, from the sound of things you could use the change.

If I were in your position, I would stay in JHB and try and get some stability in your life. Going through what you said has its impact on your health and happiness. Then look at yourself in a years time from now and see if your situation is better or worse than it is at the moment.

Besides which, job hopping doesn't look good on the CV.

Not sure how long you've been with your g/friend but it sounds like she's a considerable factor in you making your decision.
Sounds like the move here will be good for your happiness.
Sounds like staying there will be for her happiness.

+2. If you can find accommodation close enough you could even uber to work if you must work different hours sometimes but all this means nothing.

You need to tell us where you will be based in CPT and what your salary will be like. Does not help you pay R3000 and work in the CBD because then you are going to struggle.

Bru, I'd move! You need a fresh start as you say and as saor points out, if you stay in JHB it would really only be to please others, at the cost of your own happiness...

While the new start sounds exciting don't underestimate that support base that you seem to have via the family/gf. Its nice having people close who would help you out when you are in a jam. We have had a pretty hectic year or two with my daughter having been diagnosed with some major stuff and having family around to help has been huge.

Thanks for all the replies guys...you have no idea how much you helping me out in terms of getting some perspective, i really appreciate it....

This hit home...hard!

Thanks for the response...would be based near the CPTICC. Salary is decent(I think), net is above R20k....If that helps

If I can find a place close enough, dont even mind walking a couple kms...did it when I first started out..so roughing it out is not an issue for me....

**** it, move and start fresh man, sounds like you need it.

To save some cash, don't stay in town rather look for a place 10 - 15 minutes away. And make sure you live close to a train station. For the first few years after moving here my only form of transport was the train, its dirt cheap too - My commute was from Mutual station (Pinelands) to town (12 minutes)

I have noticed that prices in town are ridiculously expensive, so have looked at surrounding areas, as long as public transport is available, not too fussy on the area. Wish this was the main concern of mine...

What is it then?

What is it then?

Guess the effect it will have on everyone and my relationship with everyone involved...hard to explain. I think some might see it as me running away from my problems or me distancing myself from everyone. I really dont know how to explain to you how I feel at the moment...Part of me says dont be dumb and take the chance and just do it! And part of me says stay and be with those who have supported me and helped me through rough times....

Guy, the best advice that I can give you is to start fresh. You're getting a decent enough salary to get by on your own.
You can't let the feelings of others hold you back from accomplishing your own dreams.
Yes, they have supported you; but they should be mature enough to realize that you are doing this for the greater good and moving away from a life of depression...

Do you want to live in depression with support or do you want to get out of your depression while standing on your own 2?
Nothing stops you or your gf from visiting 1 another every now and then, or even the family... and she might even start to like it down here in Cape Town.

Here is my thought...

Will the "fresh" start in Cape Town be all that amazing? I don't think so. You will still be the exact person you are in CPT as you are here in JHB. Once in CPT you may feel that you miss your now ex girlfriend and your family. You may start to wonder what if the ex was THE girl and you cocked it up as she is now with someone else.

Look to the future. Where would you like to be in 5 years time? Where does your heart truly lie? Do you love your current gf, do you see yourself getting married to her? Do you want to live in JHB or CPT... or anywhere else for that matter.

Make sure you fix yourself first before making big decisions otherwise 5 years will surely come and go and you will still be unhappy
