To be honest, in my opinion. Lockdowns is needed for South Africa and more enforcement. These restrictions is a must for us in SA. Not because we want government to force people to either stay indoors or have a curfew or not being able to buy Alcohol or Cigarettes.
Just for our own lives and People around us and everyone's loved ones.
In some country's they have managed to have little to no lockdowns and restrictions are minimal. They follow the rules and guidelines and think "safety first". They keep away from eachother 2meters and wear the mask (correctly, over nose and mouth). They go to work in staggered manner (not everyone go in at same time, or some work from home on certain days and all that). Their numbers didn't go as high, deaths was minimal and their freedom was pretty good and everyone was pretty safe.
Why doesn't it work here by us... It's cause of our mentality and unfortunately we say on paper and in forums that lockdowns is not needed because we want more freedoms and less lockdowns and restrictions and earn money. That is unfortunately. The downfall and somewhat whats helping some of us. Yes, people want to work and earn money, yes we can be safe if rules are followed (as mentioned done by other country's).
The SA Problem: Our people cannot follow rules or decide not to or Ignorance or Forget. One mistake can lead to a series of infections or even a superspreader due to people not doing what they should or forgot or they just ignored the safety rules. You see people walking in shopping centre's with a plain surgical mask then it's only around mouth but they nose is sticking out and the person is breathing in and out through the nose. You see people standing on long cue's of 30-50 people trying to goto the banks or a clicks or a Spar's. They also stand 30cm away from one another as if Covid doesn't exist. They seemingly don't care or don't know that 20cm or 30cm is not safe socail distance. In the malls, you might keep your distance, wear mask and be safe, then maybe you go to buy a KFC meal. Then you get someone standing right ontop of you. Or standing right next to you to look at the menu (while you look at menu yourself.. which you waited your turn for and social distanced)
SA people also go visit their family and friends even when it was level 3 and 4. I heard of area's and read about people still partying like it's 1969 when it was level 3 and 4. Visiting family's and uncles and having braai's as if Corona was on vacation. Alcohol being the major consumed drink at the event and then people drive home drunk even during curfew.
Then you ask, why do they want to ban alcohol or why do they implement these lockdown rules.
If everyone didn't follow the rules, the virus would have spread 90% through SA by now. It has spread faster and been more deadly...due to people not following the rules. We could have saved alot of more lives if everyone simply followed the rules like they do in New Zealand, Japan etc.
It's not about banning things, it's about saving people. No one wants to put restrictions on other people, no one likes it if government wants to be like a Fear Mongering teacher.. Telling you, you can't eat in class or just start chattering away while teacher is talking, while class is in session. The reason is, if everyone did it. No one would get any work done.
Same would apply, if rules are followed, People survive long enough till everyone has had the Vaccine. Specially the elderly. Young people not thinking of other people's lives. Yes if they are in fairly good health, they will survive corona. They not thinking they can and will be carriers for a 2 weeks if they do get it. Giving the virus to an uncle or elderly colleague or possibly a parent pr maybe someone's grandma or grandpa in the process.(When they go to the mall and stand right next to them like sardines)
I'm all for having jobs open, people need to work to make money. No one wants economy to be in trouble (no industry). We can do it safely....if we all comply with the rules. Stand away from your fellow South African by respecting the 1.5meter to 2meter distance. Dont' stand right ontop of him. Wear the mask correctly over nose and mouth. Sanitize when entering a shop or bring your own to sanitize when entering and exiting your car. Don't visit shops and family and friends unless there's a critical situation or need. Having a braai is not critical. You can whatsapp and video call any family member. Shops i visit 20min in and out. Same with Medications, I go there 20min and i'm on my way home. No window shopping or chilling at the mall.
