Yeah even government run schools were pretty strict on protocols
 
I think they should go back. The schools have well established protocols now to ensure social distancing, sanitation and wearing of masks. Apart from the disruption to the educational process, it is pretty hard on the kids emotionally to be isolated and to be subjected to uncertainty like earlier this year.

A lot can change between now and January and what must be done must done but schools should only be closed if it is absolutely necessary.

Good point, I was only thinking in my limited immediate experience (Garsfontein High). Schools that aren't as financially stable (rich, tbh) are of course going to have a much rougher time of it.

Let me rephrase my statement then. Any school with a decent headmaster should already be anticipating and planning for the worst (full lockdown).

I'm saying if schools do not reopen and classes need to be done remotely again.
 
In my view schools should reopen as on schedule, BUT, people have become more reckless with the precautionary measures and practices. The landscape is changing. Nonetheless the schools are a proven controlled environment. Audits will need to be in place and people need to be honest with others and themselves.

The last thing we want is a outbreak which snowballs in our education system.
 
If I were government, I would utilize the relative "quietness" of the next 2 weeks to mull over the decision.
 
Doesn't matter if it should or should not. If she says no, it will be closed. If she says yes, it will be open.

Throw a dice and wait for the answer.

But then parents and kids need to join the party to make sure the kids are doing the work at home. (And get the kids to read at home!) Teachers can teach the kids at school but last year, apart from a few outliers, the kids did nada in class and/or brought nada stationery or books so all they did in class was sit and stare at the teacher. And no one is allowed to share stationery so they can't sponge off their friends to even do minimal work.
Surely if you're a parent you check homework and make sure your child brings their bag to school? Don't you look in the bag to make sure they've packed their books? When you drop the child off at school, don't you notice your child is walking in to the school without a bag over their shoulder?
And more parents than I expected asked for the school's online learning platform code after the year's final exams. I finished the year wishing for an F stamp I could use on parents' foreheads.

Teachers are already seeing it. Majority in grade 1-3 should not be progressed because they can't read and maths is abysmal. Grade 1: an easy 15-word spelling test of sight words, phonics, and phonetical reading words, with 3 unseen words, had an average of 1/15.

Academically the year can be summed up by a grade 7: "I'm only at school to see my friends."

Obviously while everyone's health and well being is important... unless the checkers cashier is going to be educating my kids I'm more concerned about the 2021 school year right now.

Sarcasm...lol. But, the teachers unions will have you believe it's ONLY the teachers affected by this. It's all and sundry.
Of course teachers are there to educate our children, and that's what they SHOULD be doing. Not having us pay a decent clip every month for both parents to frikking have to do their jobs for them. That's the annoying part.
Suddenly they can't do the online videos...but others in the same school can.
I never graduated as a teacher, neither did my wife. And there are NO discounts offered for schooling in light of the 2 hours per day per child (done in parallel) having to check up on them and make sure they're doing what they need too, whilst trying to hold down our jobs and not lose them.
So...the children, where possible, should go back to school. Our kids school has already forked out money from their own back pocket to ensure the environment is as safe as can be because the useless government didn't.
