Hi Guys,

My wife took her car (Mazda 2 Diesel) to "dealer A" on the 13th of October 2018 for her 60 000km service. She was assured that the brakes are still in a good condition and they do not need replacing and can still go for a long time. This weekend (02/02/2019) we heard a noise from the front-right wheel (like dust on brake pads, but when you are turning, not braking). I told her that she should book the vehicle in for a check. She then, today (05/02/2019), booked the car in at "dealer B". They phoned her back stating that the brake pads are so shot they actually damaged the discs and the discs now need to be skimmed as well! This to me seems like negligence from "dealer A" when the car went for it's service in October 2018. We have only done 6000km since the vehicle was serviced. Am I wrong in thinking that it is only fair for "dealer A" to cover the price of skimming the discs. I fully agree that we need to pay for new brake pads, but the buggered discs is a direct result of their incompetence! Especially when it is R2000 to skim the discs.

Don't break pads start making a noise as warning way before it starts digging into the discs?

Take the car back to Dealer A (or Dealer C) and ask them to do a check instead. Get a second opinion.

Yup normally a little metal tap touches and makes a squeaking noise.

Why would dealer A let an opportunity to make extra bucks on the brakes pass by? And the car does not make a noise when braking but the brakes are so shot that they have damaged the discs?

I will hazard a guess and say OP's wife is going to come back with more problems from this dealer than it had going in.

Why would discs that need a skim make a noise when a wheel is being turned? Did you inspect the brake pads at any stage? I generally don't trust any car dealerships with any of my cars and make an effort to ensure that what they tell me is truthful.

Yes, surely OP and his wife should have heard the brakes are moertoe
Not fool proof. I've had it happen that those little metal strips responsible for the audible warning brake off completely which results in no noise. And the pads can only be inserted one way into the caliper, so it's not possible for those to fail due to incorrect insertion or incorrect side (ie left/right or inside/outside of disc).

R2k sounds a bit steep for skimming the discs, tbh. but yes, it does sound like negligence on dealer A's part.
What bugs me though is why are you hearing it only when turning, and not when braking? Surely that doesn't sound like a braking issue.

There is no way in hell the first dealer will ever in a million years fork out to another dealer for their negligence. Never. They should in a perfect world, but we don't live in one of those. School fees. Pay it and save yourself the waste of time trying.

Yeah unfortunately I do not drive the car everyday as the bike is the daily, but went in her car this weekend and I heard the noise and asked her about it. She said it only started last week. I also thought it was weird that I heard the noise when turning. Anyways, we went to the Kruger over December and I could honestly not hear a squeak from the brakes, they also felt good and actually still feel good. But here is the quote..

I am not going to argue about that. It could also be that the guys just wanted to go home as the car was serviced on a Saturday.

dealerships will quote you an entire engine needs to be replaced, if there is something small broken,

OP, get a second opinion from a independent brake shop, check according to the specs (most shops can measure this and advise you accordingly)

one thing I learned form reading and hearing all these horror stories, is visit the dealerships as little as possible,
and try to do simple things at independent mechanics, things like brakes, tires, shocks even.

as when they see you can be taken for a ride, oh boy, do they try their luck, especially with the wife/GF/SO
hell some of these dealers are so dodgy they will try their luck with pro mechanics themselves.

So have you accepted the quote?

You in JHB by any chance?
Seen some strange things with the Mazda2. Stones getting into the braking system etc. Could be that.
