This is one of those debates where nuance really matters. Vaping and smoking aren’t the same thing—but that doesn’t automatically make one “safe” either.

From what current evidence suggests, the biggest difference is combustion. Traditional cigarettes burn tobacco, producing tar and thousands of toxic chemicals, which is why smoking is linked to serious diseases like cancer and heart problems. Vaping, on the other hand, heats a liquid instead of burning it, which generally exposes users to fewer harmful substances.

That said, vaping still isn’t risk-free. There are studies pointing to potential lung and cardiovascular effects, and the long-term impact is still being researched.

So should it be treated the same as smoking?

👉 In public spaces, I can understand why many places group them together—mainly for simplicity, social comfort, and to avoid confusion. Not everyone wants to inhale anything second-hand, regardless of whether it’s smoke or vapour.

👉 From a harm perspective, though, most public health discussions treat vaping as a harm-reduction alternative for smokers, not an equivalent habit. Many smokers have used it as a stepping stone away from cigarettes.

In short:

  • Same? ❌ Not really
  • Harmless? ❌ Definitely not
  • Better than smoking (for existing smokers)? ✔️ Generally yes

At Vapeaah, we usually see vaping as a tool for adult smokers trying to move away from cigarettes, not something for non-smokers to pick up casually.

Curious to hear what others think—should policy focus more on harm reduction or strict regulation
