There is widespread speculation about a possible acquisition of iBurst, but its CEO says that talk is cheap and until the money is in the bank there is not much to say about the issue.

The phrase "talk is cheap" should not really be used by CEO's of local telecommunications companies.
 
I wouldn't be suprised if Vodacom buy iBurst. IBurst are planning on covering something like 70-80% of SA, this means cheap VoIP for all, and a real threat to the all-powerful cell operators.

VoIP in SA is definitely not cheap [considering the price of broadband to start with], but I assume that Mtshali meant that Vodacom et al are offering less than Mtshali is prepared to run away & retire with...

If on MTN or Vodacom it could well run up an even bigger talking bill. The most economical would actually be iBurst and even the 1G package should be enough with 64k after cap. Anyone tried VoIP on iBurst after cap. I think a possible saving in the thousands makes it relatively cheap SA style. But you're right, by world standards it is expensive and they don't even have interconnect agreements with the operators to provide network to VoIP calls or VoIP to network calls for cheaper. We need some strict regulation there to force VoIP operators and network operators to "play along".
