Does it command the same swag at the other ones? My sudden interest in watches may wear off at some point (hopefully not), so I'm looking for something I can sell if another mid-life crisis hits.
Swag. LOL! Perhaps you should look at Patec or Rolex then.

Only mechanical watches (automatic or hand wind) really carry any "swag" amongst watch collectors.

Not that swag. R20k MAX swag.
Unless you know your stuff (by self admission you dont), its not likely that you will be able to buy something that will keep its value or appreciate for R20 000.

Wear your Fossil with pride, enjoy it and use the time to educate yourself before some clown convinces you that you will double your money with a Tag purchase.

Youtube is your friend.

I'm jonesing for a Big Pilot. Has to be the normal 46mm one with the power reserve and that long seconds hand plodding over the dial. They seem to keep their value really well sadly.

So I never owned a watch before but want to give it a try. I'll be 44yrs old in two months. Mid-life crisis sort of.
If you were to choose between Omega, Tag Heuer, or Seiko (how long is a piece of string?). I know nothing about watches AT ALL and not sure if I'm going to treat it the way it should be treated., but I thought why not give it a try.

I bought a Fossil this week. Should be getting it tomorrow.

What style of watch do you like, I'd start there first. You won't go wrong with a Seiko tbh. Seems like your max budget is 20k which gives you some room to work with. Can get a solid piece for that.

Tissot, Seiko, Orient, Citizen, Hamilton, Mido and others are in that range. Forget about Omega at that price, might find a 2nd hand TAG though.

I'm disappointed.

I will wear my Fossil with pride indeed.
if you want to get into mechanical watches, buy a chinese homage

R5000, and you get a bloody good watch - https://www.sanmartin.watch/ - EVERYTHING here will be high quality, and you'll get cheap fast shipping with tracking

I have San Martin, Omega, Tudor, Rolex - they all give me joy

I like but they are massive.

I'm currently really wanting a Mark XX, or a Mark XVIII
They seem really extortionately priced for very basic 3 handers. I don't see what they do that my Sinn or the multitude of Stowas, Lacos etc don't do for much less money.

Those two dead boring Saffas making watch vlogs in London made some long videos about the Mk series.

This Junghans Max Bill is my kinda style for now. I think someone here posted one.

Was me, I've got one of those, you can get a 2nd hand automatic in EU for around your price point but not sure about getting one in SA. The quartz version is cheaper. Don't know many other brands you get in SA that do a Bauhaus style.

Sternglas look like they ship to SA, you'd pay customs but would come in well under 20k. The risk is buying a watch you haven't tried on though.

Also have a look at some Orients or Seikos, the Bambino is pretty awesome. Seiko cocktail time range might be up your alley too.
