It is a real 1892 5 Shilling Single Shaft coin. Decided to send it to a watchmaker in the US. They cleaned and 'antiqued' the coin which gave it that 'rustic' look and then turned it into a watch. The Stainless Steel bracelet and black dials was my own choice.
I'm loving it! What motion is this based on? Was it an existing watch you reused?

The watchmaker used a Swiss Quartz movement, which powers the watch. It is also water resistant up to 50m. No, it was not an existing watch. You get to choose things like the bracelet and the arm dials. I just basically sent them the coin.

I decided on the more expensive Stainless Steel bracelet, because it looked good with the silver coin. Also, due to the size and thickness of the coin, you do not have a lot of other options available in terms of a bracelet. Also, due to the fact that the coin and watch is heavy, I do not think a leather bracelet would work well.

I also decided upon the Antiquing of the coin, because everything would look too 'silver'. The rustic colour of the coin now breaks the silver colour and really looks good. In fact, the features on the coin stands out much better. The coin is in tact. They did not need to split it. Seems they only did the hole in the center and the movement was placed below the coin itself.

I actually didn't know of such services, that's why I'm getting into messing with watches myself. That really is awesome how they did it though; gives me a few ideas to try later down the line. Thanks for the details!

No problem. I first tried locally and spoke to a couple of watchmakers. None were sure how to work with the coin and they were also not sure if they would end up damaging the coin in the process. I never found someone locally to do it. I came across Aurista Technologies in the US who works on coin watches. The watchmaker was a lovely older lady. Her husband did the actual work on the coin itself. They did it perfectly in my opinion.

Nice! I have the same one. Sadly it's back in the watch case as I've lately developed a stupid obsession with collecting Seikos.

Pretty much the only Quartz Seiko I have. All the other ones are Automatics; I actually have a whole pile of broken ones coming in next week that I'll either repair or mod
I've had 3 of these SNA411's (2 stolen). Currently on the hunt for the SNA413 too.

Best feature IMO is the fact that its so dynamic with different straps.

Very Cool - The Moon watch is my ultimate.

Sadly I only have the Casio Ediface Version paying homage to the Speedmaster

One day
Nothing wrong with that.

It's one of those slippery slope collecting hobbies - I've been after a DSOTM Speedie for years and years. Kicking myself for not getting one when they were still vaguely in reach for normal people.

The one pictured is quite old, around 20 years. Some happy nerd context: it's an Apollo 17 special for Cernan's last walk on the moon, of which the anniversary is my birthday and is engraved on the caseback. Not the reason I bought it, but a nice coincidence.

German today:

Are you in South Africa? Where do you do your hunting?

I get the feeling there are treasure troves of quality vintage pieces lying around in drawers as there isn't much of a watch culture or market, aside from medallion men and show-off politicians.

Based in JHB.

Due to lack of availability and crazy local prices 100% of my current watch scroll had to be imported sadly.

For new watches:

Prices are nuts and they're taking the piss on margin.

G-Shocks and Seikos cost 100% more than RRP in the US and UK.

Pretty much all my watches are imported, mainly because of variety to be honest. In the case of Seiko, we mostly get only the made in Malaysia ones here, not the Japanese made ones (not that it makes the Malaysian ones inferior, the Japanese ones just make it a little more unique).

What is interesting is that there's a roaring trade in 2nd hand (and junked) Seiko's in the Philippines. I still can't understand why, but I have 7 broken divers coming in early next week (a few SKX's in the lot as well) from there. And the dude I'm getting it from has lots more.

Nice! I still need to get around to changing my bracelet to a Nato strap. I even have the straps here, I just need to do it haha

Oops, forgot the watch pic
