Showmax launches Max Data Saving mode

Showmax has announced the launch of Max Data Saving mode which promises to consume only 50 megabytes (MB) per hour.

“This is currently available within the iOS mobile version of the Showmax app and will be rolled out to Android app users soon,” the streaming service.

I am trying to figure out what the quality of a 50MB/hour stream will be. I know MPEG-5 can do wonders but will they use that and what will it look like? I mean even the sound quality will have to be crunched like crazy. Probably only mono channel audio...

Hopefully one day they will introduce higher bitrate options (higher video quality) for both Showmax & DSTV.

Why? If you can afford an iPhone then surely you can afford data.
It's in the same vain as app purchases, many people don't mind dropping serious cash on a device which will (hopefully) last them over 8 years, but the thought of $0.99 drops, mobile data and cup-of-coffee subscriptions shudders them to no end. This applies to both parties naturally, but unfortunately those that use hand-me-down iDevices will get shunted more due to developers knowing that iUsers are most likely willing to shell out more.
