ShowMax tested

I would like to try a 720p show to see what the quality is like on my 4MB ADSL connection. But if they don't give free shows in 720p quality then how are we to test it? And no, I am not interested in the signing up for 7 days and give them all my banking details in the process.

Most probably my AH account then. Even the new AH green is *****.

If you're using Chrome to stream, I think Netflix caps it at 720p, which you can then override - all other devices will automatically allow 1080p.

Don't see as single show there that I haven't already watched or want to watch :p

I think they preying on people to sign up for nostalgia. I will be doing it purely because of that. Some things I really want to watch again. But once that has been done. What else do they have to offer?

I tested it on a 10Mbps adsl line with a IS account and there was no buffer and quality was on 720p all the time. Installed the app on my LG G4 and tested it with MTN LTE with Afrihost apn option and it worked very well and quality was good.

I think they did a pretty good job and at the price point of R99 per month totally worth it.

Wonder what servers serves the content. If it is Mweb it could cause some problems with providers not peering with them.

Quick tcp view showed it was served by Akamai servers hosted by Telkom. This is if you connected with IS. It might change depending on which provider you use I think.

Them not having 1080p is going to annoy me slightly. Netflix is 1080p. Should not be that much of a difference on the Tablets but on the TV's you can clearly see the difference.

Yes I agree. On my 1080p tv I can see it. Still not be but lacking the wow factor.

They also have bad compression artifacts on their lower resolution streams.

If you have setup your Samsung TV to be on another region to get the Netflix app, does this mean you will not be able to install the ShowMax app. I just can not find it in the smart hub. What am I doing wrong?

Just tried some of the free offerings to test with and no go on linux with chrome & 2mbs line, those three dots just keep flashing.

EDIT: Just tried a few other browsers & you get prompted to install the Widevine plugin which is not available for linux & many browsers.

That's that then. Dunno why they can't offer a platform agnostic service, don't have these issues with hulu, netflix, bbc, itv etc

If they had Going Nowhere Slowly, I would actually consider it :o

I have no idea why that show never made it to dvd?

It's probably the best thing to come out of the sabc and is a great show, use to love lying on the couch on a sunday watching it.

Thanks, looks like it requires WINE which I have no interest in though.

Linux, streaming wise and gaming wise getting there slowly. :p If you run Linux you must install some things you don't like to be able to do most things Windows does almost out of the box, just the way it is. I need wine for teamviewer, as one example.
