Simmbook: cheap Ubuntu netbook

This looks really good.. Waiting to see the sa price

It definitley looks smart, but ...

3 USB ports. VGA connector and Ethernet connection all on the right hand side is a serious mistake. All these cables will be in the way of any right handed person who wants to use a mouse instead of these horrible mousepads.

From their warranty policy: If the battery provides minimum of 30 minutes of battery backup it does not qualify for a replacement.

I'm not holding my breath, cos with all the resellers in South Africa, the SA price will most probably be ramped up to R3000.

*You cant even order a pc from the SA Dell web site. Makes my blood boil.

It will be interesting to see the SA pricing.

I see on the website there is 3 models. If I look at the specs it seems that the article gives the specs of the model in the middle. Hope the price is also for the model in the middle and not the econo model.

@Alastair, how well known is Simmtronics, i.e. how safe is it to fill one's details in on that online ordering form?

I would have preferred to buy from Cannonical instead of giving my details to some strange company in India only to receive lots of spam a day later...

I agree - serious design flaw there, and it looks like the power supply plugs in on the right hand side as well. But one should remember that it is a Netbook and not a desktop or notebook replacement, and it does have wifi so you can use it at home without being tethered to Ethernet, but one of those USB ports will be begging you to plug in an HSPA [or other mobile broadband] modem.

Left handed ppl dont count! (kidding)

Anyone know if the standard 3g cards will work on it? or on ubuntu at all for that matter, ive never done it.
Generally 3G modems do work with Ubuntu 9.10, in some cases you might need to get the latest firmware loaded for your 3G modem, but best to Google here and on ubuntuforums.org to be sure.

I bought one of the early Asus netbooks with flash memory. I eventually got annoyed... my hands are too big for touch typing effectively, and it was too low end to put Windows on as I needed a few apps that Linux couldn't install with. I put Windows on, and then got frustrated with the speed, so went back to Ubuntu, and now it is just used as a network analyser for testing. Using it for anything else is just plain annoying :-(
I really need portability, so now have bought myself one of the Dell 11Z's, which is REALLY amazing, but costs an arm and a leg with a single 4GB of memory. I hope these low cost Ubuntu netbooks work out, as they look like they could certainly fill a gap in the market.

Exellent!

But unless it is available from the shelf in South Africa, not of much use - no support, no guarantees.

But it could create some others to drop their prices as well.

I believe Ubuntu netbooks make great servers for home use :)

At R1400 I'll take a few, but I fear it will never be that price in SA

India????????

+1
Trust that Mark was not taken by Indian charm:erm:

Those are pretty generic specs for a netbook. The only thing that's really bringing down the price is the lack of an MS OS.

Although, why in the world does it show the netbook is running Windows XP and not uBuntu 9.10???

This is just the thing for running on "online" business.
I would buy it but I have 3 laptops and 2 servers already.
