Hey guys, wanted to know if there's any motivational techniques you might know that works?

Things I tried (and worked for as a prospect/goal):

1) [-]Titties [/-]
2) [-]Money [/-]
3) [-]Money & Titties [/-]
4) [-]Weight-loss [/-]
5) [-]Weight-loss & Titties [/-]
6) [-]Weight-loss, Money & Titties [/-]

None of those seem to get me motivated enough to perform and move forward in my job (I work for myself). My aim is just to make enough money each month to pay the essentials. So far my internet is free (Except for R131 line rental). My cellphone is R60 which gives me around R200 airtime. The other expenses I've cut down to a bare minimum. To bring me to a point where I don't really have to work hard to get to my monthly "this is how much I should make to not die" fund.

Yet, I tend to sit and procrastinate the entire day instead of work, and the couple of hours I do work I nail.... it's just tedious/mundane/non-challenging work I do to keep the pot cooking so to speak.

Other than that I'm pretty much happy. Almost moving onto month 11 for working for myself and not doing too bad. Managed to pay off my credit card, close the account, pay off my petrol card... bit in the red but heh...

I know if I were more motivated I'd be able to not only make ends meet but actually make enough money to do stuff. Not that I can think of what I can do with the money I'll make extra... probably pay off those muslims I borrowed money from... but still... ya know... it's hard (that's what she said)

So yes. Forum, I turn to advice from you guys... whasuuuuuuuuuuup

Buy books on motivation - every book you can and read it. I bought a book on focusing and it also helped me to overcome the troughs when you do not feel motivated.

However, if you only buy and read one book then take my advice and buy The Sales Bible by Jeffrey Gitomer. Do not be fooled into thinking that it is a sales only book. He talks about motivation (very important for a salesperson), setting goals etc. It is one of the best books ever, and also serves as a very good introduction to other motivational speakers such as Zig Ziglar.

The Sales Bible is a book that every single person should read at least once a year....

I have read dozens of Moti books and attended many courses and lectures ... this was all great when I was in sales and had to do targets of R200K-R500K a month in sales.

Since I've been out of sales I don't care for this stuff. My motivation these days is my cycling. Can I attain a cadence of 90rpm while cycling 600m uphill? Can I do a 50km race in sub 3 hours?

At least I know have a life, loosing weight and no longer suffer from male problems (and the wife is very happy).

Go talk to a mate.. hire him as your personal head slapper...

Everytime you procrastinate, he gives you a clip around the back of the head for being a twit.

You say you don't care for this stuff; yet you still set goals when cycling (setting goals being a cornerstone of motivation). Perhaps reading all those books has made it become second nature? :D

Unless your in sales, these moti books are not always the solution. My motivation is getting a chance to ride behind some hot chicks ass on single track :D and not some cheesy DVD by Dr Brian Jude.

I find more motivation in my sport and my faith.

Yeah I think the key is to find out exactly what it is that motivates you and then stick to that. I drive past the Aston Martin shop when I'm feeling down because I know its just a matter of time before I buy one.

And Queen, Don't stop me now :) Or any other music that makes me want to just work.

Look, I'm not knocking these books down but they do have a place. They are not my motivation anymore but I should give them more credit. Without these motivational books and speakers I can hounestly say I would not be where I am today.

When I'm cycling up Spanish Farm I'm more motivated by my seeding for next years Argus MTB than Dr Brian Judes or Zig Ziglars power of persuasion. I'm a developer now and if I need an ego boost I just zap a few lines of code:

while($ego < 1000000) { $ego++ };

Perhaps try break the cycle of procrastination? Create a time log; write down how you spend every minute every day, how much time each task takes you... if you're doing it real time you'll notice immediately when you're starting to procrastinate. The easiest way to stop is to think of the first bit of work that needs to be done and start doing it immediately. You're doing it for the same reason you started this thread, so no need to analyse the motivation. If you see work, just start doing it.

Thanks guys, but reading a book will just make me spend time reading a book... and then clients get irate again... whoot?

It's called keeping a timesheet... which I need to show the guys I actually did some work. Doesn't help much hey.

I think the issue is there is a lot of work I need to do for a lot of people, one of which is my own project colab-thing with a friend of mine. Should also see more work coming in during this month.

I don't know, maybe goal setting is the problem here, but even if I set these goals there's nothing "of value" that I lose when I don't reach them. So I'll tell myself (for example) I'll get up 4am to do it and then do my day XY and Z.

But when 4am rolls around, I think, "****it, I'll get up at 6, the work is easy anyway"

So yea, I keep on doing that... and the work is easy... it's just (off the top of my head) 5 clients I have to do each with several small changes etc...

Feels like I'm getting nowhere. Even if I do a little with each client. Then I get demotivated again and just procrastinate again (youtube FTW!)

So any quick tips on getting me out this cycle? I write down what I do, it's part of the whole invoicing the client thing. I don't want to read books as I never finish them.

I think I have A.D-something... can we have class outside?!

hmmmmmm, you need to find a hobby. You might have some now, but they don't seem to do you any good. Don't have to drop them completely, but you need something to lift your spirit. A happy person is a motivated person. Your problem might be slightly more than just being in need of simple motivation.

ps. Do you have everything you ever wanted in life? Nice car/bike? Big TV (some guys like that kind of thing). Anything you feel you want and would appreciate?

Hope you get up and get out of your slump. :)

Quit playing with your tits and get a woman.

Exactly the same here... unless there is something important waiting to be done at work I struggle to get there by 11am, even later some days.

What helped was taking Ritalin as I turned off my alarm clock, so 20 minutes later I'd be lying wide awake in bed itching to do something. Once you start a task it's pretty hard to get sidetracked.

It backfired though in that I'd end up doing something else, like tweaking the scripts running on my home computer, for hours and got to work even later than normal.

Now I take a potent B12 and Ginseng supplement when my alarm rings, and Ritalin when I eventually get around to going to work. This way I stay really focused once I've started working, and find myself struggling to stop sometimes, which is great for getting things done.

I might try the B12/Ginseng? Anything you could recommend over the counter?

What? And complicate things even more by having to please/keep her happy? No thanks. Not now.

I play World of Warcraft which I quite enjoy but haven't played in a couple of weeks... For the first 10 years after school I worked my ass off trying to get those "nice" things and all I ended up doing is screw myself with the banks. Took a good 4 years to work myself out of it and still have around 2 years to go.

I owned a house. I have a nice car.... thinking of getting a bike but don't want to spend money I don't have so no. Would love to just kick it and go traveling for a couple of years but heh. Money talks...and even though there's still a couple of things I'd like to do/own I'm pretty happy with what I have.

That was the reason why I posted the titties/money/weight-loss thing with lines through it. I'm pretty happy with where I am now. At this very moment, overweight, no titties, not a lot of money.

If those things do not motivate me then what?? Because I figure that's like the 3 main things that motivate people right?

Oh, this is easy!

Get a wife! You'll soon need to provide a lot more and you'll feel inadequate for not being able to do it, thus forcing youself to work harder and not feel inadequate.

Getting a woman to do that is trickier than you think. Even though, I agree fully, if I were to marry I would be more motivated to provide so we could start a family.

But that won't happen so I'll stick with other ways possible.

Oh on a side note, I tried weed a couple of times this week. People always looks so happy when they're stoned and motivated (even if it's just sitting around spitballing ideas or planning stuff that won't ever happen or raiding the kitchen)

But other than a buzz/light-headed feeling I don't really get why people smoke weed. (Or do drugs). Sure it feels nice but it's like.... okay... now what... is this it?
