I'm looking for a skipping rope so that I can start skipping as exercise (gym isn't working for me)

The problem is that it seems all the skipping ropes on sale in south africa (that I could find in my online search) is 2.5m. I am 1.93m tall and according to some online publications, I would need a skipping rope at least 3m long. Can anyone confirm this?

Where can I find a skipping rope which is 3+m long?

Could try Mr Price Sports, got mine from there, not sure about the lenght.

I tested the length with a piece of that nylon car tow rope that you can get cheap cheap.
I am about 1.92m tall.

I then bought the cheapest towrope I could find, and used the handles to make a towrope that matched my length requirement, and the same nylon tow-rope.

The nylon does wear away eventually. But, it's cheap to replace.

What is the length you then decided on for your skipping rope (without the handles)? I'd rather buy something already made, as the last thing I tried DIY, it almost cost me a thumb. :)

Skipping Sux - good luck with 30 minute, that is a LONG time :). It is a very good way to burn energy, and it makes you light on your feet. I would try sportsman warehouse, they had some pretty long ones last time I was there.

30 minutes??? I think u underestimate how exhausting skipping rope actually is. If you make more than 7-10 minutes i would be impressed.

+10.

I started by saying i will jump 100 times. That went down to 50 as soon as I started:D

I'm hoping if I don't have to get in my car and go to the gym to exercise I would actually get to it.

OK, i'm sure I wouldn't last 5 minutes, as I'm extremely unfit. Will have to see once I get the rope.

I phoned Sportsmanswarehouse and they couldn't tell me what the maximum length of the EZ Jump Rope is. I'll probably go there after work to see whether they will work for me.

Do you perhaps know if it is 3+m?

Well, the length thing is a real problem, because I don't have a measuring tape here.

I started out with the rope too short, and then it would hook my foot.
So I made another, but it was too long and would hit the ground too far back.

Then I just shortened it little by little by tying knots in the rope near the handles until it hit the floor nice and sharp but was missing my foot by what I think is a good margin (I cannot actually see behind me. :D).

I also am pretty sure that I changed the way that I hold the rope handles as time went on. I used to move my arms a lot when I fists started, but this has become a slight movement of the hands.

I think that I changed the rope length about 5 times over the months.

Also ... you need skip rope music that plays at the exact speed you skip at, or dead silence.

I have a problem with dead silence because my mind tends to start thinking about work and life and stuff and next thing I know I'm lying in a tangle of limbs and rope.

It's quite an awesome feeling being able to hop about while the people around you are so flat footed.

Mine was that nasty Rubber one's you buy. If it hit your legs you cry!! So you jumb like a hooligan :) I have heard that the leather ones hurts just as much..

To think back way when... we used to skip rope for fun at recess.

hahhahaha.... good luck. it will work for 2 weeks then...

at gym it's better because you are motivated to do like other people...

hahahaha... good luck again...
