I'm going to both shops after work to see what stock they have. Will report back on what I found, but I've learned that buying cheap isn't always the way to go. I've always bought the more expensive one later (you'll know where the extra money went).

I am also trying to lose weight by skipping. Got my Nike rope from Makro but how long should I skip? I started with 100 skips per set and rest half minute in between, 4 sets a day in the morning. Any suggestions?

Japie, let us know how long you last on your first day. Hopefully you crack the 5min mark

I'm hoping if I don't have to get in my car and go to the gym to exercise I would actually get to it.

Hehe, I'm a dedicated gym goer and I have a punching bag at my house. It takes far more motivation for me to hit the bag than it takes to go to gym in my car... GOOD LUCK :D

I might be called a snob.. but i don't shop at Mr Price

indeed, mr price sports is actually not that bad...

I do a variety of things, sometimes i set goals like must burn xxx kj/calories before i stop, or i skip until my H/R reaches a certain period then do a slow jog till it drops. Or do intervals of skipping and situps/pushups.
What you are doing will do more for fitness than for losing weight i think. Slow ur skipping down and try keep it continuous for longer. If u can keep h/r around 70 - 75% of max thats ideal.

Will try, thanks.

I undertstand what your are saying but a skipping rope doesn't have any moving parts or anything and mine is still fine had it for close to a year.

Sportman's warehouse is very exspensive was also looking for weights, they wanted to charge me around R500 for 2x dumbells. In the end I got them at Mr. Price for Less then R200.

If I can get a 3m rope from Mr. Price Sport for cheaper than Sportsmans Warehouse, I'll definitely buy it from there. It's just that when I spoke to the person at Mr. Price Sport, they couldn't tell me which jumping ropes they have in stock or what length they are.

Really scarce thing to find. only ever seen them at Mr.Price sports (resently) and some Sportmanswarehous'.

The leather ones are like being whipped if you "sprint-skip". I either hit my hand, or my back gets whipped.

I personally prefer the leather because when you sprint skip, it does not strech, start hitting the floor and then bounce back into your feet.

The con on the leather once is that they tend to wear out as it sometimes hits the ground/floor. I replace mine about every six months. You can also use the cricket bat oil and apply it on the rope to loosen it up as it tends to become dry and hold the shape it was wrapped up in packaging.

You get some ropes with swivels, some with ball-bearings. I prefer the once with ball bearings as the allow a smoother motion and you can skip quicker.

Mr.Price sport has some ropes that actually counts the amount of skips you do. quite cool.

I went to Sportsmans Warehouse first and although they have about 5 different jumping ropes (R50-R150), I couldn't judge the length as it remained in the coil it was packaged in, and seemed quite short because of that.

Then I went to Mr. Price Sport and they only had 1 jumping rope (a MaXed cotton jump rope). It also didn't indicate its length, but as it seemed the rope could be easily replaced, I bought it for R25.99.

After taking it out of the packaging, it seemed quite long (although not 3m). I measured it at home and it is 2.75m (which is about 9 feet). I'm going to try it later and will report back.

It does seem that most of the jumping ropes on sale are 9 feet although they look short while coiled up.

If I am able to use the 2.75m rope, I might consider buying a leather one of the same length. I also considered buying a leather one and just extending the rope on both sides?

Until you want to puke initially.

it might be my technique, but I suspect the length of the rope is the reason why my feet keep catching it. Will try again tomorrow in daylight.

PS - I lasted all of 2 minutes... and I almost died twice! :-D
Tomorrow I'm going for 2 and half minutes.
