As per the thread title, I would like to know if there is any way to skip this ridiculous fee that comes with most new contracts?

Go direct with the network via their callcenters. Every year I renew 2-4 contracts on my name and can skip this fee if I work via the networks callcenters. Personally I don't because I like to make my SP work for his money whenever I have problems.

* I've got 6 contracts between CellC & Vodacom

So you work via eg. Vodacom Direct? Do they usually have the same specials than the Vodashops have?

You have to pay the connection fee, but if you give the store a prepaid sim that you've been using for a while you don't have to pay for the sim.

I work via a Vodacom SP (independent store) because the owner works hard for my business (but charges me a premium which I gladly pay). If it where not for this guy I would rather go Vodacom Direct - same specials.

And on CellC (have 2 contracts there), I go in store even though they charge R100 fee for something each time. I gladly pay them as they have all the phones on display, PCs with links to www.gsmarena.com (nice touch) to compare your phone and read rants about it. I also get the phone immediately so don't mind.

Are you sure of this, as they charged me the normal R202 for the sim&connection on Saturday when I went to convert my prepaid over to contract ...

Correct. I converted my prepaid sim into a contract sim and also didn't pay for a sim.

I have a VAT Invoice here for:
1 x 64K Sim - R105

Had to pay that on the spot ... It is a normal prepaid number I'm converting to a new contract. I got a "SIM Swop" SMS etc etc and I switched the old sim with this new one after the old one went dead. :confused:
