The perfect way to avoid tailbacks on the motorway is a step closer today in the form of a revolutionary flying car.
But the sleek red craft is light years away from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. The Moller M400 Skycar is designed to cruise up to 360mph for a distance of 750 miles. Drivers could hop in the craft in London and arrive in Paris 35 minutes later.
The craft has a lower fuel consumption than that of a Land Rover or Porsche and will eventually run on alcohol.
Moller expects to have a full-working prototype by 2012 and will start selling a craft certified by the Federal Aviation Administration a few years later.
'We already have over 100 reservations for the FAA certified models,' a spokesman said.
The developers believe the craft will be relatively cheap - costing $500,000 - because it will use eight inexpensive ****el rotary engines instead of jet engines.
But you won't be able to fly the Skycar from your front door. Although it can launch from a space the size of a helipad, it will have to be driven to an airport (at a top speed of 35mph) for take-off and landing.
And should we all take to the skies, Moller believes the three-dimensions will prevent over-crowding: 'Our view is that you would have layers of air traffic and whenever one altitude became over crowded another would be utilized,' a spokesman said.
