Skype's demise

Microsoft Corp. is signalling the end of the line for Skype, the iconic Internet calling and chat service it bought almost 14 years ago.

Once a byword for digital calls that bypassed long-distance charges, Skype was surpassed in recent years by smartphone-native communication apps and Zoom video calls.

The free 60 minutes that come with M365 sure do come in handy. Not sure what I'll use as an alternative.

Like WhatsApp calls?

I despise them, and they usually come from someone who has toss internet signal.

Hello, hello, can you hear me? Hello kan jy my hoor? It's like moving back to dial-up vibes. I usually drop the call and call back with network minutes.

Ffs.

It used to be like that. Whatsapp is now more stable than the normal networks.

Agreed. Normal calls drop or cut out temporarily often since 2019. WhatsApp, in comparison, is mostly stable and the sound quality higher.

I wonder how long it'll be untill WhatsApp calls to service providers become standard.

D-Day today.

Skype is shutting down today

It's the end of the road for Skype as today marks the official retirement of the legendary communication platform. Existing Skype users can migrate to Microsoft Teams (free) with their Skype credentials, contacts, and chat history automatically transferring to the new platform. Skype users can export their data until January 2026, after which it will be permanently deleted.

Microsoft’s official reasoning for shutting down Skype is “streamlining our free consumer communications offerings so we can more easily adapt to customer needs”. Microsoft Teams (free) does come with a few downgrades compared to regular Skype. Group video calls are limited to 60 minutes and you also can’t use Teams for pay-as-you-go calling and SMS like you could with Skype Credit.

Good bye Skype... you were pretty good to us (especially considering it was a free tool).

Back in the day, Skype used to keep on trucking even when your ADSL was like hard capped. lol.

I have been marking this sad day and the email I received from Skype regarding their shutdown to remind me to look for an alternate option for cheap international landline calling.

What else do we have out there? Apparently you need a US phone number for Google Voice. Does Viber do the job?
