Skyrim without Steam - Help!

*yawn*
Was up till 2 last night.
Managed to play like 2 minutes of the game until I got stuck by a bug...

The install too a while (also took a while for me to figure out how to use my Vodafone Huawai USB 3G modem with a Cell C sim....) and downloaded a sh*tload of stuff. (I checked later on and note that downloads was 511MB!!!!! and Uploads (why??!) was 21MB. It also downloaded a newer Direct X for my PC and Microsoft.net framework (why?!).

It used my full Cell C 500MB bundle and some of the airtime too. Bleh. :(

Anyways, so I couldnt even play more than 2 minutes of the game... In the Keep/tower in the first few minutes of the game (I read on walkthroughs on the net) the dragon was supposed to blow a hole in the wall where I had to leap through...only in my version this scripted action does not seem to happen... I can hear some noise and the NPC says "jump" and onscreen it shows "Press space for jump", but nothing happened... the keep/tower is in tact and no hole is to be seen anywhere.... wtf.
Now what? Do I complain somewhere?

Just load another R 50 for your last 500MB's for the week :D

Serpent, did you go up the stairs to your left as you enter the tower?

Ja I plan to load another R50/500MB. @ Pitbull
Yup @ EnchanterG - went up the stairs - spent a lot of time on the stairs and walking around every square inch of that little Keep/tower to look for the hole.
I'm really out of ideas here. :/ where can I find save games? (Even with another person's character stats)

I would recommend tracking down the console command. You may be able to trigger the event.

I used Player.SetStage to finish a Mages quest.

Or just try restarting the game? It's not even 5 minutes to get to that point. I doubt it will bug out twice.

I've put in around 40 hours so far. Only 2 crashes to desktop in that time. The only other bug I've had is a dragon not burning up to give me it's soul. Though I had beaten the same dragon before as it is one of the ones at a dragon wall and I also had 7 spare dragon souls so maybe that had something to do with it.

Download cracks for the game then make backups of the original files that the crack overrides.

I think Steam just broke my game. I've been playing Skyrim in offline mode for the last few weeks. This morning I started up the game whilst still connected to the net. It started downloading some 70mb patch. Thereafter, when I tried to start the game, nothing happens. All it says is something like: "Do you want xxxx to make changes to your PC?" I select "yes" and it just sends me back to the menu screen. So I can't start the game anymore. Had to rush off to work so I'll start researching later when I get home to find out what the problem could be.

Pretty damn annoying. I will probably be able to make the game run again after looking it up on the net. What about all those moms and pops who buys the game for their kids and have no PC knowledge? Not everyone has the capacity to go look up stuff on the net to find out why the stuff they bought is not working anymore.

I have no mods installed and have not done any funny ini tweaks except for disabling smoothmouse and vsync.

More Bad News - installing Skyrim is as fun and easy as trying to squeeze cooked spaghetti up a wild cat's rear end. Check Google on the procedure before starting - Steam will try to download the game (the whole 5.7Gb!!!) unless you follow the less than comfortable route...

Was pretty straight forward for me. Put disc in, follow the instructions, let it patch, and play.
How the heck do people get to have to download almost 6Gb? You must be doing something really wrong o.O

The game starts downloading automatically for those who installed steam for the 1st time. I had to cancel the download, clear the registry and force it to install from the disc.

I didn't have that issue. Installed from disc without fail first time. Seriously what are you guys doing?

Seriously who the **** doesn't have a 1GB+ package or more p/m this isn't the 80s any more

When I installed mine, it also tried to download it, and I already had Steam on. I just cancelled the download, removed the local game files and then tried again from the disc. Second time it installed from disc. I have installed Skyrim twice now on different machines and both times I had to follow the same procedure.

Well then what is the pattern between your two boxed VS my two boxes which didn't do it. If the installation really was broken in that manner then it would have happened to everyone trying to install it not to a selection of the users. That means that something else is causing it and not the installer.

The only odd thing that I saw was that Steam gave an error that the game was not available at the time. I forgot about it until I read about it in another thread. Perhaps that's the reason why it's downloading. I'm not sure why it would give the error though.

I have Skyrim on order from Kalahari and expect delivery any day now.
Only sh*t is I have read posts and reviews that mentions that the game will need to install via Steam and will install a 200MB + patch?!

I only have a 50MB 3G bundle. GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

Any suggestions? I sure dont wanna pay a fortune to install this game or download patches that I dont need just yet (might d/l at a later time or wait until its on a NAG or PCF dvd). Any very cheap pay as you go 3G bundles out there for about 250MB?
Better even, any No-Steam crack that installs the whole game from my original DVD and dont go looking for a patch online?

Thanks.

I use MTN uncapped 3G lite for R299 per month. First 3 gigs are full 3G speed way faster than ADSL (when the network isnt busy // damn you MTN) and then uncapped at 128kb/s

Its the best I can do since Telkom doesnt want to install an exchange in my extension.

Weird that might be "connection related", I only get that either the damned thing doesn't connect or are too busy for some reason.

well i have uncapped so i dont even bother buying games that cant be played online, so ive got skyrim cracked, so it installs without steam and you dont need any internet connection to install it. :P

Better download an anti-virus to go with those games while you're at it.
