Skyrim

So in my mind enchanting boils down to the following:

You need 2 things, a soul stone (different sizes) and the soul trap spell
You can either cast soul trap on a creature or have your weapon apply it (if the weapon has this)
You then need to kill the creature within x seconds depending on your soul trap spell or the weapon
When the creature dies its soul gets trapped in the soul stone, stronger creatures need bigger stones
You can now use the filled soul stone to either recharge your weapon or
Use the enchanting to add new bonusses and effects to your armor and weapons.

Oookay but when using the enchanting table you need to use a enchanting spell, an item and a filled soul gem. When I made my super axe of awesome it made no difference if i used a petty soul gem or a larger one. I think i am going to wiki this one..

That's strange. What soul was in the larger soul gem? Remember a grand soul gem with a petty soul will be just as useless as a petty soul gem with a petty soul. For better effects you need to get a 'bigger' soul. A grand soul will give you max potential.

this sounds like a bit of a stupid system?

If you dont have a weapon that has "kill creature in X seconds to capture soul" then you need to cast the spell?

Which means that if you have one hand weapon, and one hand destruction... then you need to swap one of those out to the soul capture spell...

thats quite annoying. you gonna be chopping and changing non flippin stop... eish!! :(

I thought it was odd as well. Both soul gems read as "filled". If you consider the enchanting process once you have selected the enchantment and the item there is this little box that pops up with a slide bar where you get to balance off the strenght of the enchantement against the amount of charges.

This oddly happens before you have selected a soul gem. If I max out the strenght (minimise charges) and then select a soul gem it makes no difference to the characteristics of the weapon other than cost. Using a bigger gem pushes up the potential selling price of the weapon.

Other than that I can see what difference it makes. It is possible that there was a petty soul in a larger gem but it did say filled..

I think that I will try this again this afternoon to see if I get different results...

The soul gem sizes indicate the max number of charges

I can enchant a bow to do +10 fire damage, with a petty gem, it'll have 7 charges... with a black soul gem it can have 137 charges

With Armor enchants, the larger the soul gem, the stronger the effect (ie, +magicka can be +1 with a petty and +20 with a grand)

Oh and to recharge enchanted weapons, highlight the weapon in your inventory and push T to then select which gem you want to use to charge the enchantment

Open your inventory and scroll to your soul gems, it will say in brackets next to the gem what type of soul is stored in it for eg "Petty Soul Gem (Petty)" or "Grand Soul Gem (Petty)"

Even if a grand soul gem has a petty soul it is still considered as 'filled' because you cannot remove the soul or add a bigger one.

The easiest way to get the best souls is to get Azura's star, then you can fill it with human souls which are always considered 'grand' and Azura's star is reusable.

Okay, a round of applause from me for all the great responses. I think I get this now.

@Occulate, off the top of your head, any ideas how to recharge a weapon using a Xbox controller?

Try inventory menu, items, weapons, highlight the weapon you want to charge and look at the bottom of the screen, it should tell you what button to press to charge your item.

I bought this game yesterday, and i must say, really enjoying it!

I have never really played rpg's before, so its all very confusing to me.

I seem to be doing something wrong though, my inventory is always full :(

Im a lvl 12 wood elf, focusing skills on archery and 1 handed weapons, yet i still struggle

to kill things. I did a mission, just before they turned me into a warewolf, and i had to try

kill bandits in the cave like 15 times before i got it right :(

Already having archery and 1 handed I would suggest that you add sneaking. It gives x3 bonus to Archery damage and if you are using dagger x15 bonus for sneak attacks.

Check the weight of items in the Weapons and Apparel tab for anything you aren't wearing/don't use and sell or drop them

The Misc tab has most of the junk you'll find, a general goods shop will buy that from you...you can easily fill up your weight limit in this tab alone

Just because you're playing an archer playstyle doesn't mean you're restricted from using magic - if you don't want to advance your magic, don't put perks into those fields

what i dont understand is why the favourites menu is so crap.

let me give you an example... I got the game on 360 and PC.

On PC I know there be a mod to improve on the fly swapping.

on 360 we have 8 possible keys on the D-pad yet the entire thing is dedicated to opening one menu that takes a long while to scroll down if you equip most potions..

So is a dagger probably the best option for me? I Have been using an iron mace, because i picked up an enchanted one.

Ye, i only have the items that im wearing "light armour" and my bow/iron mace.

The rest of the weight seems to be from having alot of gems/scroll/potions etc, but i dont want to get rid of it because they are worth so much, yet when i want to sell them, either they dont come up for me to sell, or the price goes from like 500gold value, to selling it for 80 gold sorta thing...

Certain merchants only buy certain goods;

Alchemists will buy potions/ingredients from you

Blacksmiths will buy weapons/armor

General goods will buy everything from you

As for the price reduction, it gets better over time as your Speech skill increases

I think I've said it here before, but I can't wait for the creation kit to be released for the PC version.

I've been reading the forums over on some of the mod sites and the ideas and examples of what some of the guys are planning to do with the UI are amazing.

Agreed!

NEED MORE MODS!

I found the detailed night sky mod... standing outside High Hrothgar on a cloudless night is stunning

.......

Your doing what I did when I just started playing games like Oblivion and Fallout.... you're picking up everything you can possibly find, including pots and junk with low sale values/worth.

It takes time but you have to adjust your mindset from mindless looting to reading through what your looting options are. Hehehe, I remember with fallout I was like "WTF how can my inventory be full after like 2 mins of looting?!"
