I am seeing thousands of people die on the so called western "medicines". The whole concept of allophatic medicine were probably designed to enrich the slavemasters. How can you cure a disease by treating the symptoms? Diseases can only be cured by removing the underlying causes of the disease.

How does the average life expectancy of the western (and eastern) countries compare with the life expectancy of African countries? AFAIK it is decades, not just a few years.

And although I personally try and avoid anti-biotics and similar medication, and concentrate on a healthy lifestyle with a balanced approach to mineral and vitamin supplements (prevention rather than cure) I would not consider a sangoma or witchdocter as an alternative to a common garden variety western style educated GP

And while we are on the topic of comparing the historic achievements of broad geographic groupings, what can be allocated to Africa excluding Egypt? And what modern achievements can be allocated to Africa, excluding SA?

Exactly VanZan, I have asked Johan that question before and he did not respond. He should stop his hippie propaganda till he can answer that. When I had malaria I did not have Western medicine, it affects the liver and today I suffer the consequences. Repeated diseases batter the body to make a person die young.

I don't take anti-biotics unless I know I need it. When I have a flu or a cold I refuse them. I do take supradyn everyday.

It is true Africans need to take responsibility for themselves. In particular here in SA. There is no excuse for staying oppressed and that goes for any oppressed people be it financially or otherwise.

Having said that, when said oppressed people decide to make a change, do not as the former oppressor get in the way. Sad as it may be your opinions do not count. This is not fair obviously but neither was the situation that landed us here.

You cannot under any circumstances do something to a people you shouldn't have done then turn around and tell them how to react to it. You do not have that right and it is not for you to point fingers. Africa was never afforded the opportunity of developing independently from colonization so it finds itself where it is because of many things, but mostly colonization. One cannot under estimate the damage that is done to a marginalized people generation after generation. That added with peoples own self destructive ways give birth to a very grim situation. Both the oppressor and the oppressed need to take responsibility.

However this is not impossible to fix, the West* does not give its monies out of good will, they benefit. If nothing was to be had from Africa then nobody would donate it's that simple. The very glorified west* that is spoken so highly off was the same west that enslaved and colonized to begin with. They are not owed gratitude just like the Africans are not owed aid.

As for those who believe the world would have fallen into darkness had it not been for the west,please get over yourselves. The technologies you enjoy today are made possible by the far east, every single component that comes together to make that computer you type on comes from the east. You are not a representation of a geographical area, you are one person with an opinion and that's that.

I never claimed to be patriotic or that the ANC ignores me. You know that the ANC only has one agenda though. I've actually considered joining the ANC to change it from the inside out. I don't have faith in this continent, there is not even hope for it. Although you challenged edc in this regard and I would not presume to prevent edc the pleasure of providing you with the facts, I would like to point you to a little gem of book. (I still spent much time reading the old-fasioned way)
The story of mathematics by Richard Mankiewicz isbn 1-84188-138-4

It provides a neat and consice history of the development of mathematics, and except for a quick detour through Mediterranean Africa, the rest of Africa does not receive any acknowledgement. Although I would not presume that this is the only or authoritive reference on the history of mathematics it does tie up with my limited education and experience in a technical environment.

With reference to your deluge of abuse and name calling on edc, it reflects poorly on you and your point of view since you fail to convince anybody else of the merits of your argument because you fail to provide facts. It also makes you appear guilty of the same characteristics that you appoint to edc. If it is true then maybe you should take your own advice?

Regarding your political refernce to the ANC. It is always the majority power in a democracy that tend to ignore the small voices and pay the dearest price. Please look at all the new democracies in Africa that followed from colonialism. All had a majority democracy rule and all (except two) either failed democratically and degenerated into civil war or failed economically and now require continuous aid and are knee deep in debt (when they are standing on their heads) This did not happen because of the West (or East or where ever) but inspite of the aid and investment from the same. The exceptions are Botswana and Namibia but their circumstances are unique in this regard and it is not because of political ability or skill.
