Slow Cookers

Oh and potatoes and some other harder veg do better if pre-cooked a bit, even if only in the microwave before adding it. While they do cook they sometimes comeout a bit hard even after many hours if not precooked a bit

I have plenty of DIY recepies. The key to any slow cooker stew, is a packet of white onion soup. But make it extra thin,I usually mix it with 1.5L of water , not 800ML as the soup norm. Bay leaves, parsley, garlic and salt. Pepper corns to taste. I let it simmer on auto for about 8 hours.

And do remember it needs to cook for long in the slow cooker, the temp is lower than on the stove top, but little to no chance of burning should you leave it unattended.

Unless ofcourse you leave it on high and rush out unexpectedly to only return 6 hours later. :erm:

I usually brown the meat in a hot pan with olive oil as well. Just to seal in all the goodness.

I do the same. I some spices to the meat and then sear it on very high heat. After that I add it to the slow cooker with some braai sauces.

Chicken, I just brown the onions in a pan, then add the chicken and onions with some spices and sauce.

I'm not very creative yet as I've now only done it a handful of times, will try out some more methods from next month on.

Share some of your recepies with the novices of us here
Pasta sauce, curry, stew, soup, pulled porks, pot roasts, etc

Curry: I get my spice stuff from indians. While I am white the white people's curry stuff in PnP, checkers etc tastes schit.
So unless you get proper curry stuff I don't know how to advise how. My mom was taught by an Indian lady and mom showed me how.
While I have been living in Joburg for many years now there is no place in Joburg that can beat a decent Durban bunny chow!

See I would have just chucked the cut onions in raw

Whatever you can make on the stove you can make in the slowcooker.

You need to use less water.
If you want fried onions and such I normally do that on the stove. Dump everything with some water into the slowcooker. Set to high if you want it going quicker, and turn it down to auto once boiling. If no time to watch it then turn it to auto at the start it will auto adjust between high/low to keep the cooking process going.

I've had a kenwood for about 7 years now. Its still going strong.
That's largely unnecessary. It may vary from brand to brand but for the vast majority (including Kenwood) Auto means that it starts off on High and, once reaching temperature, automatically drops down to Low, where it remains.

So we have gone for the RH at Checkers for R450.
The same model and equivalent Kenwood was R599 at game

Like the idea of getting home after work and having a cooked meal without me cooking, the SO can't cook.
That was a bad experience.
