Do you own one? Would you recommend buying one?

What do you like to make in it?

Trying to decide if I need one or not. :D

We got one. Its great for some meals. For stews etc it really makes even a bad cut of meat really tender. We also do pot roasts, soutvlies, etc in it and it gets them so much more tender than doing it in the oven due to the moisture being contained. I'm a big fan. Also like the way you can get all the ingredients ready on a Sat, put it in the fridge, and then dump it in before work and leave it on low and come home to an amazing supper etc.

Still, best feature is how tender it makes meat if you cook it for 8 hours or so in a nice gravy.

I would recommend it.
Curries come out awesome... stews, pot roasts, soups - lots of things

It's great to throw some ingredients in to the pot in the morning, and come home to cooked supper

We got the el cheapo pineware one and it does the job but the ceramic inner pot is showing tons of hairline cracks. Still, we just wanted to try it out and may upgrade to a better one now that we know we will actually use it regularly. The one feature I would like on it is automating the turn on time as sometimes for a special meal someone has to get up late at night to turn it on for dinner if the cooking time is 10 hours +

Some great ideas there. Never done curries or pot roasts in ours. Care to elaborate on the pot roasts? What meat and basic ideas on cooking it?

We had a few different ones but have sold them all so they must be quite popular. You just dump a bunch of ingredients into the slow cooker and you let it run, the smell from that machine when you lift the lid made me want to find a way to speed up the process. Your meat comes out so soft it slides off the bone.

Wonderful goodies, try get the biggest one you can as I find the awesome food it cooks is never enough.

I got a Kenwood as well.

One of my favourite things to make in the slow cooker is a lamb shank. Rub the meat in garlic, salt, pepper and olive oil. Place it in the slow cooker with stock and some red wine and let it slow cook for 8 hours. Then, just before serving, place it under the grill to give it that nice browned colour. Meat literally falls off the bone.

I must also add that I have never had any luck with a curry in there. I always feel that the flavour goes. A recipe that works would be awesome :)

I'm also struggling with curry, it always turns out 'mealy', for lack of a better word. :(

Curries come out awesome....

you got some recipes to share? I find my curies lose flavour by the prolonged cooking time

Google for a recipe for traditional Rogan Josh Gosht (not a restaurant curry style which is different.) This dish has its roots in ancient Persia before making its way to India. Traditional Korma curries developed later by the Mogul Emperors also employ a slow cooking technique.

The book '50 Great Curries of India' by Camellia Panjabi has my favourite Rogan Josh recipe (so far) as well as a number of traditional Korma recipes.

Don't usually cook by recipe in the crock pot (for curries and stews anyway)
A generous combination of cumin, tumeric, ginger, garlic, cayenne, cardamom, cinnamon, chilli and coriander.

Any specific makes, or are they all pretty similar?

All similar in how they work and cook. I think the more expensive ones will just last a little longer

Use a plug-in timer similar to the following

Well you could just plug it into a wall socket timer. Works a charm!

The falling off the bone thing you can do in the oven as well. I just lift my oxtail bones out with my fingers and they look like a dog has been licking them for the last two months.
