Slow VM Data Speeds

I've put the ip into opera, and certaintly notice a difference.

...dont use IE/wont use IE ..... ew.

Cant you just add one of those ip's into your browser, instead of using googles' accelerator?

Yes, you can, but it isn't quite as effective.

GWA has an advanced caching feature which permanently caches elements that take long to load and don't change regularly (such as the myadsl logo and background graphics on this page, for example) so you don't have to wait for them to reload each time. Even Opera doesn't seem to want to keep these in cache for long.

Another thing you might want to try if your browser seems to take long to "find" pages before loading them, is to switch to a faster DNS, which might improve access times (NOT transfer time) of pages slightly.

I use

Primary/Preferred: 208.67.222.222 and
Secondary/Alternate: 208.67.220.220

Ok... In Short why my Virgin Mobile GPRS connection has been almost unusable Today:

- Regular Data stalls.

- Abnormal disconnects – My GPRS connection just drops, but an active connection is still shown on the computer. I’ve NEVER had this with VM.

- My Phone resets every 20-60 minutes. Ok. I really hope this has nothing to do with VM. As I only have this problem with VM! Not Voda or MTN… But I still cant think that this Could even be VM’s ‘fault’. The thing is I thought I was the only one and that the phone was to blame…but them my friend told me his phone also resets at random intervals with VM. help???

This is The first time Ever that I have some serious problems with using VM gprs.

oh wow
I disconnected to change my roaming to Vodacom just to see if things would improve. They did not so I reconnected roaming on CellC. After less than 5 minutes my connection suddenly felt 'dead'. I checked my connection icon on my taskbar..no problems, it's connected. I checked my phone.... there was not a "G" on the screen anymore...GPRS dropped. But WHY I ask you, why?!

I also had connection "stalling" today on VM, but only between 12-3PM. I see it's being blamed on DoS (Denial of Service) attacks on the VM network by some forum users, but it's more likely just Cell C doing upgrades on the network. They are currently working to increase the number of concurrent users the towers are able to accept.

As for your phone resetting... I can't really see how that could be VMs fault and I certainly never get that. Maybe the data stalling has just made VM users paranoid so now every phone error seems to be part of the larger VM conspiracy...

I also cannot connect the phone resetting to VM. But its not just me that’s experiencing this. And why this suddenly?

Any how…since my last post:
0 Phone Resets
3 GPRS Drops

All is going well now. Been connected for over an hour.

There are also issues with data cards resetting, Windows even plays a sound to indicate the card was removed and re-inserted. Initially, Virgin Mobile blamed this on the 64K SIM cards, but it still happens, although not as often, with the replacement 128K SIM cards. It has never happened to me with a Vodacom or an MTN SIM card. Even if the signal strength drops to zero, the data card handles it gracefully.

I also can't see any correlation between the two. I know some sims can cause resetting, but it is not network related in any way and can certainly not be affected by network issues. It appears data cards are more temperamental to these things. Possibly because they just reset whenever there is a problem. I have to say that I used to have resets on 3G, maby the stack overflowing because of the large amount of data transfer. I can't remember any resets on Virgin. I also think people are just paranoid and attributing all their phone problems to Virgin now just because it coincides with the network problems.

But I still cant think that this Could even be VM’s ‘fault’.

This is not the first time I had resets  (again not with Voda/MTN  ) but I still don’t think that this is VM's fault or that they have anything to do with this. It’s just weird. I'm going to get myself a new 128K sim...maybe that'll 'help' or something.

Also noticed my phone sometimes resets with a 64k VM sim when its fine on Vodacom. My VM connection, aside from anything going through the proxy, has been virtually unusable the last couple of days anyway, seems to be ok this morning again though.

VM have assured me its the network not the 128K SIMs. It just doesn't make sense to me either. Despite insisting that it was the network, they still sent me another 128K SIM, which makes me think they're not exactly sure. Second 128K SIM made no difference, my data card still resets with it in.

It still has something to do with them in that they need to sort it out, whether that means getting the network fixed or switching to yet another make of SIM.

Does anybody use Cell C for data? I wonder whether they have similar issues?

I have a 64K sim at the moment. Just going to get a 128K sim just to see...

This morning my connection is also ok. No data stalls or anything! Better than the last 2/3 days.

Doesn't make any difference, if anything it was slower the day I used it.
Just be assured that in my experience Vodacom is NOT any better in terms of speed etc.
How can that be when Virgin is the sloooowest on the planet.

That's subjective - my VM GPRS is way faster than my VLive! ever was.

I'm currently using a 64K SIM and occasionally my GPRS becomes unresponsive and I can't get it to disconnect until I manually reset my phone (although it still frantically sends and receives data, wasting my airtime). I'm not sure if this is SIM-related - it's probably just a coincidence.

Do I need to sign up all over agin if I want a 128K SIM and will they charge me if I want to tranfer my number to the new SIM?

O, sorry Prometheus, I see you're referring to Skeptik's signature. Notice he says "ONE OF THE sloooowest". So the others would be Vodacom, MTN and Cell C. They're all slow.

I find the same thing. The phone resetting thing is specific to the modem hardware, but the fact that the Virgin connection is so flaky and demands an annoying & time-consuming reset so often is enough to argue about. I find using MTN does not require so many resets. You can't leave VM data for more than 10-15 minutes without it 'stalling'.

He changed it after I posted that. It used to read "Virgin Mobile, the sloooowest internet on the planet ... ", until he contradicted it with that Vodacom statement.
