Sm card not being read

I have a cell c data contract and have received a ZTE MF190 modem. I use the SIM card in my iPad and works fine, however the modem does not seem to read the sim when trying to use only laptop. Please could someone shed some light. It has worked in the modem before, never needed to use the laptop though. Now I try its not working.

Did it work with the same SIM?
For iPad you had received micro SIM. It doesn't fit in the modem, you have to use placeholder.
