Hi.

Does anyone know if it is possible to buy a laptop motherboard and PSU separately as I need to build the smallest possible PC. The PC will use a cheap intel processor, 256 or 512MB RAM and the smallest hard drive. The reason I want to go this route is I don't need a laptop as the built-in screen, keyboard and mouse are unnecessary. It will go underneath the seat of a car. The case I can have custom made. The only thing is it must have onboard VGA and WiFI and there must be a VGA out.
Does anything like it exist?

Does anyone know if it is possible to get the aOpen MiniPC anywhere (The one that is the same size as the mac mini).

Regards

Itai

Why not get a secondhand laptop? New components like that might be expensive as they are not commonly available. Also need to look at vibrations on the hdd. Normal laptop hdd not really good at that environment.

Thanks ... its not for my car ... it will be used to display media adverts in vehicles ... and who needs smash and grab when the owner protects it with a gun and the perpatrators know it :P
We are looking at the EEE PC, but the prob is they are hard to get stock of on a continuous basis ... or has that now changed.

Just posted somewhere else so I'll copy it here:

The EeePC's official launch is the 1st of Feb
There was a press conference last week and it seems that (spec depending) the prices will go from R4500 down to as low as R3000 or so!!!

The retail outlets are a few well known appliance and retail stores, but of course, anyone signed up to the distributor should be able to....

Haven't found out which models are available just yet tho...

I assume, after the launch, availability shouldn't be a problem anymore.

i bought an eepc 2 weeks ago for my kid, and can say without a doubt that it is absolutely fantastic, although it does look like the keyboard is the worst part of the build. I expect it to be missing some keycaps within six months.

otherwise, it really is perfect for many tasks. and a pleasure to use, quiet, doesnt get very hot, small light...first laptop we have had that you can hold by the screen bezel and type with the other hand. :-)

re: smallest possible pc, you can go nano-itx, or even pico-itx. which is about the size of a pack of cigarettes. but add in all the custom header and ancillaries and you are in laptop-prize-territory very quickly.
surely just get an old spec laptop and be done with it.

there are companies which make 1din and 2 din carpc's, but expect it to be way over R8000.
if i was in your boat i'd just get a laptop.
