New hard drive put in last year - bigger (1TB) - no problem with previous hard drive

SMART test failed last week some time - did a check disk - SMART test passed.

Today, SMART test failed again, set check disk for startup, and rebooted. Got the SMART error on startup as well before it could even go to Win7. The press F1 to continue did nothing. Nearly had a heartache as my last backup was a few months old.

Reseated RAM and harddrive.

Rebooted a few times, still stuck on the SMART message. Went into the Bios and started a hard drive test there (1min/GB), aborted after a while and rebooted. This time it got to the check disk stage and went into Win7. Again a SMART retest shows all clear.

The hard drive is an HGST bought last year October.

Looks like a new hard drive required? :(

Try Crystal disk info

Now would be a good time to make that backup.

+1 for backup first.

When you say SMART test failed, what do you mean? Is it SMART tripped, or some attributes reached critical level? Post SMART attributes reports as in 1st reply.
Scan entire HDD for delays (Victoria for Windows) and post results.

Would be interesting to see what Hard Disk Sentinel reports.

Backup, replace drive, claim warranty. Or convert to port.

[-]#5 is worrying, nothing else[/-] EDit: Sorry, I meant #C5.
G-sense shows that you handled laptop with care.

Cancel these tests. It won't bring anything in your case. Except maybe Surface Scan test, but if it doesn't meassure delays, but sectors returning UNC error, it won't help either.

See my first post. I you were out of warranty, I would suggest re-writing entire surface and check whether [-]#5[/-] #C5 raw value clears up. As it is warranty case, do as per my first reply.

C5: Pending sectors 10 after running tests:

Probably there are already BAD sectors (not delays, but completely unreadable). Firmware will not remap such sectors, as there might contain important data. Other possibility is firmware corruption.

Re-writing affected area might force relocation and clear this parameter. But if you run surface reading tests afterwards and raw value of this parameter is non-zero, HDD is for replacement. Early warning would bring scanning entire surface for delays. You didn't do it.

Pending sector count is nothing to stress about.

S.M.A.R.T is log based, there is no such thing as a false positive.

Log based means that the values are stored permanently. You cannot erase or otherwise remove SMART data once it has been collected.

Pending sector count is a bit special however, it will decrease once the sectors have been remapped.

10 really is an insignificant number for a 1TB 2.5" drive however.

My NAS has a drive that has had 5 pending sectors for over 2 years now and it is still running 24/7/365.

People put too much stock in SMART correctly identifying failures.

Keep backups or better yet backup important data to cloud based storage (eg. Dropbox, Zocalo, etc.) and you'll sleep sounder at night.

Read first message and subject line. It was SMART error on the boot.

+1 for backup first.

When you say SMART test failed, what do you mean? Is it SMART tripped, or some attributes reached critical level? Post SMART attributes reports as in 1st reply.
Scan entire HDD for delays (Victoria for Windows) and post results.

Does Victoria normally give errors when trying to run, but still opens the program?

No. What error? Are you trying in external USB enclosure? It will also work (select Windows API access), but reaction on disk errors is not predictable. For soft errors it will measure delays correctly. Run default read scan. Other options are for forcing relocation (repair delays when someone has still important data) or destructive scan, but it is better to fill-up with zero's and repeat scan afterwards, watching SMART before and after.

First: "Unknown error or driver not exist"
Second: "Invalid handle"
Third: "PortTalk driver not installed! Available only API access"

Also, surface scan only works in 4.3 and not 4.46.

I know nothing about your hardware/software combination. It works fine on older computers. Victoria 4.46b freeware (12.08.2008) it is what I use. It comes with Hiren's Boot CD. Boot miniXP and find in HBCD menu->disk utilities. Or boot your own OS and autorun from CD. If computer can boot Windows XP, it will run this program. Not sure about W7. If you test USB drive, only Windows API is available.
