A video has been loaded onto YouTube by Craig Jennings and is dated 15 January. One can see a man walking along Witkoppen Road, near the Cambridge Road intersection.

The man seems to be drawing attention to himself and attempting to talk to passing motorists. In the other corner of the video, one can see a second man, keeping watch. As a white Landrover Discovery passes the first man, he appears to throw an object at the window, after which he climbs half-way into the vehicle.

A commotion occurs and the first man runs across the road, joining the second man. They both jump over the bridge and disappear out of sight.

Founder of eblockwatch, Andre Snyman, said “This spot is a hot spot, like every bridge over the highway, which does not have an off-ramp. The getaway car is parked under the bridge in the highway.”

Snyman added that as the suspect jumps over the barriers and gets into the car below, the getaway driver accelerates away. “The victim is stuck in the traffic above. The smashers are far gone by the time the victim realizes what has happened. The problem is that we do not make eye contact with beggars and tend to look the other way. This is a perfect storm for a smash and grab.”

It is amazing just how fast it can happen. I wonder if the vehicle had smash and grab fitted?

Important lesson (easier said than done) to not have anything in sight that attracts attention of these guys. He walked past other cars, looked and avoided them.

According to the description of the video it had smash and grab and tinted windows.

Definitely. Almost had this happen to me at that big Pick 'n Pay there on William Nicol. Guy tried to punch my window but didn't work so I went into first and pulled into the closest open lane. Learnt my lesson about checking work emails in traffic :(

Would keep a knife on the door side of my seat. Though I wouldn't want to get his blood in my car

Or just have a car with smash & grab protection.

Which begs the question why doesn't a car of that calibre have it? Why don't all cars have it from the factory?

Seems this is what smash and grab is suppose to do :

Thankfully it did not work. It could happen to all of us. How many times you see people speak on the phone while in slow traffic?

If you think you are somehow immune if you have smash and grab film you are not.

I sometimes wonder whether I will have the clear-of-mind reaction to try and run down such a mofo when I see it happen. I don't care for the damage to my car.

Unfortunately seen it happen plenty of times sitting in traffic, especially in Randburg. The key is to not have anything visible and also smash and grab doesn't help if they use a spark plug thrown at the window.

You will be in far worse a position with the law than him.

BS
Inside your car is your property, if someone comes in uninvited you have a right to defend yourself, I'd stab the pos in the neck if I had the opportunity

Last year sometime 3 hijackers attacked some bloke in his tinted window car. They broke the passenger window and were met by this. All 3 shot dead :D

They throw a spark plug with the ceramic end first as it shatters the glass. Even a small piece of ceramic will shatter most un-laminated windows easy. The steel parts of the spark plug will bounce off even an un-laminated window most off the time. Try to bash a car windows in with a hammer sometime, even if it is pointy. It is harder than you think.
I thought smash and grab just stops the glass from shattering.
It still shatters but stays in one piece, like your windscreen.
