Smokers in racist attack on bus

The people advocating corporal punishment assume everything else can be held as equal which it clearly can't, there have been numerous other changes in society since the time corporal punishment was used, you can't attribute all the change to that.
But are you willing to say that there has been such a paradigm shift in society that it wouldn't work?

As far as I'm concerned corporal punishment was a good thing, it stopped me from doing alot of stupid things at school and it kept things at the school somewhat in line.....

Now its gone, the school is a total nightmare imo...

I'm not saying it wouldn't work, the question is should we be considering it in what we like to regard as a civilised society? There are lots of solutions to problems that could work, we could probably declare martial law and end crime tomorrow, but at what cost? In essence physical violence is barbaric, however "clinical" it may appear to be. While an argument can be made for its use in very serious offences i.e. the death penalty should it really be used as a routine punishment for petty offences?

Personally I think a lot of the problem in at least some schools here is they still retain their traditional authoritarian hierarchical structures which were previously enforced by corporal punishment and the like. Now that corporal punishment no longer exists these structures are foundering. The question then becomes, should corporal punishment be reintroduced to prop up these structures or should a change in the structures themselves be considered?

..so the smokers were p1ssed off at the bus and the bus was a different colour to them?

The problem is discipline. The question is how to "teach" these kids discipline. Today kids know there is punishment or deterrent for misbehaving.

did you mean to say - Today kids know there is no punishment or deterrent for misbehaving.

Corporal punishment might work for garden variety softies\well-todos hanging out on MyADSL, but I doubt it'd do much for a teenager whose prepared to lay a beat down on an innocent stranger.

I'm not saying someone shouldn't kick his head in. I just don't think it'll straighten him out, he'll probably go off and lash out out at someone else.

Send them my way... I'll bloody beat them into shape and not lay a hand on them at all....

I swear, I was not the softie/well-todo at school but the thought of six of the best kept me in line more often than not.....
