How many of you have used a nicotine patch on a flight?

and how effective has it been?

Not a smoker, but my money would be on nicotine chewing gum. Mainly because one can control the dose better & I think absorption is also faster.

Get yourself an e-cigarette and vape to your hearts content in the toilet. Just blow the vapour towards the floor to avoid activating the smoke detector or steath vape in the discomfort of your seat.
If you mean by patches killing all your cravings on the flight; no they don't.
but they take the edge off slightly as long as you don't think about cigarettes. When you nod off you may have wierd dreams.
e-cigs are just like smoking without all the combustion and chemicals and smell... so you get all the pleasure but I wouldn't go as far as vaping openly because what looks like smoke prrobably is smoke to the anti-smoking dickwad sitting across from you. Plus some airlines have forbidden the use of these -just do it on the sly and no-one's the wiser. If anything you are humidifying the cabin air, which is a good thing.

I ask this question - as I neglected to consider the consequences of not being able to smoke on 2 long haul flights and suffered to the point of wanting to literally jump off the plane. On my return trip I used Habitrol patches and a single patch allowed me to endure being without a cigarette for almost 24 hours straight. I am wondering therefore if these are effective for everyone as they have been for me. SInce I began using the patch on the flight and each day after, I cannot smoke Peter Stuyvesant Filter (red) anymore as I feel ill when I do (whilst wearing the patch)..I used to smoke about a pack a day. Now I am resorting to Daviddoff slims..as these are pretty light..and can only have a few puffs before I start feeling ill. There are times when I go without smoking for approx. 8-10 hours, and even then I smoke for the heck of it..more like having the taste. (this from smoking a pack of PS filters a day).

I have used gum in the past but to be honest its pretty useless.

My day to day fix is an e-cig now so i'm not too phased about flying cos i'll just go stealth vaping.

Have you considered snus? I picked some up from Cock and Bull for R13 for 10 pieces. I didnt like it at all, but there is definately a nic discharge and it is natural tobacco you are getting the nic from so its probably more effective than gum and patches.

Are allowed to 'smoke' an ecig in your seat on a plane?

I find the nicotine patch Farkin useless, get nicorette rather.

Just do not chew it like crazy. Trouble with a ecig is you do not get nearly the amount of nicotine a cigi provides so you will become agitated. Nicorette gives you an ample supply and you will not get edgy.

You should not be smoking and using a patch man, nicotine poisening will set in, very bad.

You either
1.smoke
2. vap
3. chew gum

You do not smoke while using the patch or gum.

Yep, I read the warning. But guess it'll take a few days to stop totally. What are the symptoms of nicotine poisoning, do you know? I've had a bit of a fever and blocked ears since I got back..but attributed these to a cold..change in climate etc.

Symptoms

Respiratory stimulation and gastrointestinal hyperactivity are two main symptoms of nicotine poisoning.

Acute poisoning can result from skin contamination or inhalation of tobacco smoke, depending on the doses.

Small doses: Respiratory stimulation, nausea and vomitting, dizziness, headache, diarrhoea, tachycardia, elevation of blood pressure, sweating and salivation. Patient will gradually recover, after a period of weakness.
Large doses: Burning sensation of the mouth, throat, stomach, followed immediately by the above symptoms. Patient may progress to prostration, convulsions, bradycardia, arrhythmia and finall y coma. Death may occur within 5 min to 4 hours.

I don't.

But I HATE flying. I dope myself up with 2 sleeping tablets an hour before departure. When on the flight I explain to one of the hostesses and ask her/him pls wake me up when we're at our destination. I dose off just after take off and I'm awaken once I arrive where I'm suppose to be. Works like a charm :p

What I mean is. If you start puffing on one of these do the air crew tell you to stop? Are they harmful to other passengers?

Edit: Ah! Google.

Strange activity on airplanes these days can create tension and sharp responses these days even 8 years after the 911 tragedy.

So what is an e smoker to do? It is very simple. Ask the flight attendant permission in a way that they are likely to say yes that also informs those around you what you are doing and what to expect.

I came up with this idea for smoking on planes on my first flight from Denver to Atlanta, Georgia on Air Tran airlines. Here is what I did:

* First, I use my pen-style e cig since it looks much less like a cigarette and I want to maximize my chances of the flight attendant saying yes.
* Second, I wait until drink service begins because most people are awake or will wake up and are paying a little more attention in anticipation of getting their drink and a bag of peanuts or pretzels or whatever airlines are giving out these days.
* Third, I speak loudly yet politely so the flight attendant as well as others around me can hear what I am saying.
* Fourth, I DO NOT refer to my electronic cigarette as an electronic cigarette when I am smoking on planes. I instead call it a “nicotine inhaler.”

Finally, I wait until the drink service comes around and use the opportunity to have a brief dialog with a member of the cabin crew while everyone else is listening. On both flights I did this, I got very similar responses from both flight attendants. The dialog goes something like this:

Fight attendant: Would you like something to drink?

Me: Yes, I would like apple juice, and may I ask you a question?

Flight attendant: Sure

Me: Is it OK if I use my nicotine inhaler on the plane? [I then show them my pen-style e cig]

Flight attendant: Nicotine inhaler? I don’t know. What is that?

Me: It’s a source of nicotine for smokers similar to nicotine gum or the nicotine patch. It is completely legal on airplanes and not affected by smoking bans, but I always ask because sometimes when I exhale a mist may come out of my nose and mouth and I don’t want other people to think that I am smoking. The mist is just water vapor that delivers nicotine to my lungs. May I show you what I am talking about?

At this point they will give their answer. They will be more inclined to say yes calling it a nicotine inhaler and comparing it to the gum and the patch which are obviously OK to use on a plane. Also, they are likely very curious at this point and will want a demo.

While doing a demo on the plane (also while asking) cover the lighted tip and hold the electronic cigarette by the tip so that not only does the flight attendant not see the lighted tip, but also so that it looks different than how one usually holds a cigarette. Also, inhale fully and hold it for a second or two before exhaling so there is little vapor on the exhale.

Like I said, in both cases I tried this the answer was YES!

After I got the go ahead from the flight attendants I sat in my seat on the airplane happily puffing away NEVER letting anyone see the lighted tip and tried to be conservative about the amount of vapor I exhaled.

I would be really curious to know if anyone out there has suggestions on how to improve my technique or has their own technique of electronic cigarette smoking on planes. If so please post a comment so everyone may benefit!

How about you just suck it up and don't smoke, rather than trying to find ways to feed the "craving" your mind thinks it has.

I'm a heavy smoker and 14 hour flights are fine for me, I don't crave at all during the flight.

ecigs are not allowed on planes. neither Lufthansa, SAA or BA allowed them when asked. On a flight between Germany and Austria the flight-attendant even specifically mentioned that "...smoking of cigarettes (including electronic cigarettes and inhalers) is prohibited".

You will get away for smoking in the toilets (this comes with the "i-look-like-a-poor-junkie"-image though)

You must have xtra strong willpower. I am weak..as soon as we take off..my mind and body start complaining..even if I had a cigarette.. or 20.. just before boarding.

Had a few long flights and didn't really start craving it until I stepped off the plane.

Just order snacks and drinks, and try and sleep as much as you can.

Cravings your mind thinks it has?

No no those are cravings your body has and tells your mind it better sort something out :D.
