SMS has its 20th birthday

While SMS's are awesome (and hat's off to him)...that interview was absolutely painful.

Great... that's 1.2 Million technology years so now it can die.

So I was 8. I didn't even know of smses before I was like 13 or 14

20 years and no price change in the whole time. It rivals marijuana in its ability to defy inflationary pricing changes.

The irony of this is that the inflexible pricing if the SMS has also been the initiator of its demise. Long live WhatsApp :)

He made the cellphone companies very rich. Thank goodness for Whatsapp. The days of charging 80c to R1.50 for a 160 character text message are gone.

First SMS was sent 20 years ago

MTN are pleased to say it has finally been delivered!! :D

As a footnote: SMS was not originally developed for the end user but rather for installation engineers to report back on technical data when the GSM networks were being installed in the 1990's... Someone had the bright idea to open it up for public use and the networks laughed all the way to the bank! :)

I still prefer SMS over IM and so do many other users in 2012. Make use of SMS bundles and save. If and when using IM the preference is to use the industry standard like Messenger or Skype, but will not use the other crap
Perhaps RPM should start a MyBB pole SMS versus IM.

I do not know of any sms package that would result in an sms being cheaper than an IM.

And that is ignoring the fact I am on uncapped so my IMs are effectively "free".
