I am looking for a service provider who can provide me with a SMTP server for our domain.
We send out invites to our database for online and offline events.
The numbers are not standard. Could be 50000 one month and 5000 the next month.
I am looking for a cost effective solution.
Looking for some suggestions.

Morning Keru

We provide a bulk smtp service that allows clients like yourself to send any number of emails using an smtp client or your existing application / website.

We have a few packages available which offer various allocated emails per month, and overages are billed per email sent over and above your allocated number

AWS SES..

$0.10 for every 1,000 emails you send.$0.12 for each GB of attachments you send.

If you happen to already be using EC2 in AWS, the first 62000 emails sent from the instance a month, is free..
That is cheap

Regrettably we dont expose an API for that service - it merely handles the delivery of email from remote applications.
The majority of clients who use this service use it for applications like pastel, where they need to send out vast amounts of email without restrictions from thei ISP or Host.

In all honesty, this service does need a refresh and an API does make sense - will add it to the list for when we revamp the service offering.

Thanks Jade.
My problem is that my monthly limits vary to such an extent that a standard offering will not work for me.
I could be sending 3000 mails one month and 30000 the next month.

My pleasure, and I hear where you are coming from. I would suggest looking into AWS as pointed out by @WAslayer

AWS SES is great if you don't mind managing the bounces etc yourself and very cheap.

Else use SendGrid - all in one solution. Obviously more expensive depending on usage.

EDIT: https://sendgrid.com/

Free
Try it out! Send 40,000 emails for 30 days, then 100/day forever.

Essentials 40K
Send up to 40,000 emails/mo before overages apply.
$14.95/mo estimated*

Just worried about the regulatory framework with AWS. Our database is a list of our Tax clients who have been on our database for years. I am not sure if Amazon would need a double opt in option which most of the international service providers seem to insist on.

You will only have issues if you exceed your bounce and or complaint rate that they stipulate..

In any case, opt-in is very good to have anyway and would probably worth while for you to ask your current mail list to confirm that they would like to continue receiving your emails and recording this..

Decided to go with AWS. Seamless process and a quota of 50,000 per day. Very impressed.

Thanks. Will do.
Just waiting for the domain to be verified.
No need to wait for that.. you can verify your from email address in the meantime, if it has a mailbox to receive the verification link..

Have done that already.
Started sending out the mails.
