smtp.vodacom.co.za

Well, usually, SMTP server owners insist that the from address has to be an @vodacom.co.za email address.
But, voda's SMTP server usage requirements are not listed anywhere public, so, we need more info to solve.

same problem as antonf. can someone only respond if they know what they are talking about, preferably v3g. none of my settings have changed, ever.

OK: "I know what I'm talking about" :)

Or at least, I know what's causing the problem. Some new systems went in last night and some of the mail is taking a bit of a convoluted route through the network. Guys are busy resolving it.

PM me your e-mail addy (the problematic one) plus your 3G data number (the problem one). Might help the guys to trace a bit quicker.

I had this problem all the time with the wife's vodamail, and also mine before switching to gmail. Just let saix handle it. Set the outgoing mail server to smtp.saix.net - problem solved.

There's an ugly four-letter word that so many companies hate with a passion... TEST...

Why would any company TEST a new whatever?
Mercedes launched a new car and a journalist totalled it when doing the elk-TEST. Multichoice launched a decoder and made the company look as stupid as it is arrogant. Denver Airport launched a baggage handling system that chewed baggage better than a shredder ever could. The Ariane 5 rocket was not flight tested and the first flight was destroyed about 40 seconds after lift off, taking $500M of satellites with it.

The one thing we learn from history, is that we don't learn from history...

I've been having intermittent problems sending mail through smtp.vodamail.co.za via Telkom ADSL. Some days no problems, others, like today - its near impossible. I have ticked the 'My outgoing server requires authentication' and 'Use same settings as my incoming mail server' tick boxes. When I try to send mail, I get a box asking for username and password. I have checked both are correct by logging into www.vodacom4me.co.za My connection runs through a linux box so I've had a look at the packets using tcpdump and I see I'm connecting to various vodamail smtp servers e.g. smtp1.vodamail.co.za or smtp4.vodamail.co.za so I guess there is load balancing going/DNS round robin. When I can't send mail, I see 535 5.7.0 Error: authentication failed using tcpdump. I've tried via the 3G connection fail over connection and I get the same error. If I untick the '...server requires authentication' then I get 554 Error: Recipient address rejected: Access denied. I have tried smtp.vodacom.co.za - same problem.

I can receive mail no problem so my password must be correct. I've tried the 155 number and I get no useful advice apart from getting the runaround in deleting a re-creating the account. Is anybody else having the same problems? V3G any ideas?

btw, just sent a mail to myself and it went through i.e. I got it back in my inbox. Then I sent a test mail to an external address and it gave error 535. Tried again and it went through? Huh?

The Vodacom SMTP relay should only be used when sending mail while you're on the 3G network. I'm actually surprised that you can send mail when on ADSL.

While on ADSL you should use the Telkom relay. I assume this will be smtp.saix.net?

You should not use authentication settings for the relay, it will not know your mail server configuration, so uncheck these.

BTW, where ayou based?

Hi V3G, I'm based in Kyalami, Joburg. Funny how 95% of the time I can send mail no problem via smtp.vodamail.co.za using Telkom ADSL. I've always wondered why Voda's smtp server would accept mail from another domain. Anyway I've made the changes and everything seems to be working - thanks.

Only problem is now when the gateway switches over to 3G, all the outgoing mail will fail. Unfortunately, I have to do this quite often as I've lost 2 servers, 1 switch and a couple of NIC's due to lightning coming in through the ADSL, and that is this summer alone. Time to set up my own mail relay server...just I'm a Linux nugget so it's not going to be easy!

Firstly is this a vodamail account we're talking about?

If so, I've been a complete idiot and suffered from premature posting.

OK, then scratch what I said above. You should be able to connect to smtp.vodamail.co.za using your vodamail login on a secure connection.

I read smtp.vodacom.co.za and assumed you're only relaying via the server.

Ok so we have gone full circle. My settings ARE set to "My outgoing server requires authentication - ticked" and "use same settings as my incoming mail server - ticked" and I am relaying through smtp.vodamail.co.za, but I still cannot send mail. You mention "secure connection" - I have tried both SSL and TLS and I get:

"Send test e-mail message: Your server does not support the connection encryption type you have specified. Try changing the encryption method. Contact your mail server administrator or Internet service provider (ISP) for additional assistance."

Voda's smtp server SHOULD relay email if I authenticate to it (RFC 4954), which it occasionally does get right, BUT why is this intermittent? I can relay through smtp.saix.net, but not when I am on the road. I sent 2 very important emails yesterday from my 3G connection, but I hadn't changed my smtp server to smtp.vodamail.co.za, so I lost both messages. Smtp.saix.net does not always send you a relay access denied notification btw.

You have to realise how frustrating this is - I cannot stand systems that do not work as promised. I pay for this service - R29 per month - its not much, but I still pay money and expect value i.e. it to work. However, it is not delivering so my choice is leaning towards getting a gmail account and ditching the Vodamail.

The best line in your whole post:D. Save your money and use a Gmail account either on their web interface or via pop3 using your mail client of choice. Haven't had any issues with their pop3 service on ADSL or 3G/HSDPA.

Hi there,

Well a few years later and I have the same problem: "Task 'IANTD SA - Sending' reported error (0x800CCC67) : ' The server responded: 421 4.7.0 mtafscbe0604smtp5.vodamail.co.za Error: too many connections from 10.113.169.157' "

Was there any resolution with this the last time around. Phoend Vodacom, and of course got no real answers or fixes and have to wait 2 - 24 hours for feedback.. which frankly never happens.

Andre
