smtp.vodacom.co.za

Have you checked your usage on 4me?

Remember, billing informarmation are only generated on certain points and this can cause you to run over your cap. I'll find the thread where we discussed this and post here.

SMTP acting up again ......???

"The message could not be sent because one of the recipients was rejected by the server. The rejected e-mail address was '#####@###.co.za'. Subject 'Re: ####', Account: 'XXXXXXX', Server: '168.210.129.147', Protocol: SMTP, Server Response: '451 <####@####.co.za>: Temporary lookup failure', Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 451, Error Number: 0x800CCC79"

Or should I go back to smpt.vodacom.co.za ???

The thing is that I sent an email not 5 minutes ago to the same recip.

############ AND ANOTHER THING!!!!! ################

Who is the sperm donor that makes it so difficult for me to email executables. I am a friggen software developer. I create executables. I have so far zipped the exe and renamed the exe to something else and renamed the final zip file to .txt. The new fancy server is now sooooo friggen smart that it tell me exactly the contents, i.e. the file types hidden behind the renames.

I even renamed a file .PORN. BUT.... again the server came back with a message that it is against the policies of Vodacom.

Come on guys, from no SMTP to super internet police?????

Stop playing God and just open up the pipe please.

VMS

Vodacom is going to bankrupt me. With the new server I cannot email any form of exe, however beautifully dressed up. My client needs his updated software like NOW, and I am trying tricks to fool the new server to send it.

FIX IT NOW!!!! Please..

I am going to drive out to a friend with real internet to have it mailed. My client is unfortunately too far away to make it worthwhile, but maybe I will be forced to do so because of MY PERFORMANCE !!!!

YOU GUYS MAKE ME SICK!!!!!!!

VMS

I also had a problem sending for a short while .. but it seems to be ok now .. well let me put it this way .. I know the messages are leaving here but I don't know if they are actually going anywhere .. (holding thumbs and crossing fingers)

I had the usually "cannot connect to smtp server" for a while .. then the messages went but were undeliverable .. rejected with a 451: Temporary lookup failure .. looks like it is going to be another "interesting" day .. sigh.

OK, this is what I get when I send (using smtp.vodacom.co.za) an .exe as attachment:

The return mail seems to imply to password protect an .exe inside a zip.

VMS, did you try it. I'll try ans well and revert.

Our internal reference code for your message is 03957-05/nZjBwlIj0Qhs.

Delivery of the email was stopped!

The message has been blocked because it contains a component
(as a MIME part or nested within) with declared name
or MIME type or contents type violating our access policy.

To transfer contents that may be considered risky or unwanted
by site policies, or simply too large for mailing, please consider
publishing your content on the web, and only sending an URL of the
document to the recipient.

Depending on the recipient and sender site policies, with a little
effort it might still be possible to send any contents (including
viruses) using one of the following methods:

- encrypted using pgp, gpg or other encryption methods;

- wrapped in a password-protected or scrambled container or archive
(e.g.: zip -e, arj -g, arc g, rar -p, or other methods)

Note that if the contents is not intended to be secret, the
encryption key or password may be included in the same message
for recipient's convenience.

We are sorry for inconvenience if the contents was not malicious.

The purpose of these restrictions is to cut the most common propagation
methods used by viruses and other malware. These often exploit automatic
mechanisms and security holes in certain mail readers (Microsoft mail
readers and browsers are a common and easy target). By requiring an
explicit and decisive action from the recipient to decode mail,
the dangers of automatic malware propagation is largely reduced.

I have serious issues with this. My clients are predominantly non-technical. The particular client I need to email right now is in the food industry. All financial guys.

Now these guys have issues "saving the attachment as"... Now (if it worked) I need to instruct them how to un-rar a password protected file???? The "send in a zip file" thing was a stretch.

Who is the new person in control of my life? Super duper SMPT server now requires "irritate the hell out of user" software in order to operate.

Somewhere in the software you can probably set something to stop scanning for probable file types.

V3G, this zipping-with-passwords thing is not my solution. I will have to spend at least 1/2 hour on the cell to this guy on how to extract the file.

Hope the SMPT guys come to their senses.

Well, I am off, doing the software-delivery-by-car thing....At the current petrol price that is pretty stupid.

VMS

VMS, I agree with you and have already escalated this. Virus checking is one thing. Blanket blocking of certain attachments quite another.

And as I said, zipping with passwords don't work in any case. The software's to clever.

If yo take your hard drive size / cost of trip, you'll have a much better data transfer rate! :)

Will revert shortly with feedback.

Vodacom3G, I suddenly fealt very sorry for you, after reading these posts.

You are the one who get to see how unhappy we are with the current state of things, so I understand that you are trying your best. The humour was kinda funny!!!

Taking a 512MB flash drive (536870912 bytes) on a 60 minute drive (3600 seconds) and back gives you about 149131 kbytes per second. Driving at an average 100 km/h in the process gives you a distance of about 100km travelled. My car uses about 9l /100km. That is about R54 for pertrol. That is about 10.5c per MB. Maybe someone should start a service like this one :-)

But taking my rate per hour and AA wear and tear into consideration, including the fact that the file in question is only 2MB the total cost per MB, in this case, turned out to be R392.50 per MB. Which again is cheap, considering the legal costs I would have paid if my client ended up unhappy.

Thus, I have today lost more than the total monthly 1GB 3G contract payment of R600. Another one or 2 of these and I could rather give my client his money back and say sorry.

I see an increasing need for a 2nd connection. I am getting two new Nokia 6680 end of this month, on my MTN renewal contracts, and see at least one of them running my alternative connection.

So, Vodacom, (if you could read my lips) you have over-achieved. Good on you for the new server, bad on you for the over active, smart-ass software. You guys are killing me slowly. Please be kind.

VMS

hahaha VMS .. one just has to laugh .. or go mad .. there are no other alternatives .. thank god I still have my dial up as a back up connection or I'd probably also be out of business by now.

VMS .. I was just thinking .. I know this is not an ideal solution, but wouldn't it help you to have say a gmail account and to send the exe to your client via a web interface (such as gmail or another) .. that way it should go through and save you a trip .. and you can configure gmail so that your client will not be any the wiser .. they'll think it came from your normal address .. and then you can make gmail send their replies directly to your current inbox on your machine.

It's a workaround I know and shouldn't be necessary, but if you'd like a gmail address, PM me your email address and I will send you an invitation.

V3G

Baie dankie!!

My client is now having problems sending me a simple MicroVirus database file. Looks like their SMTP server is even worse than Vodacom's. Seems like these servers block anything familiar. So they are buying me more time on the 2nd run.

I tried to email a Power point presentation to a friend and it was also bounced. You might need to ask Big Brother to open up normal MS office files as well. ......Just emailed a Word doc to myself. So that at least works.

And I have emailed a JPG picture. So I cannot have a file named xxx.porn but I can email a jpg containing real porn :-) hahaha

VMS

"En daar was lig....."

Beautiful. Sent exe to myself without any problems.

Thank you very much.

VMS

Hopefully this is now settled but I'd like to do a post mortem on this, here's a question for the forum:

How much responsibility should an ISP take for your content?

On the one end of the scale, should they just be a pipe and all content management is your responsibility? (my own view, btw)

Or should the completely manage your content, inspecting packets, blocking extensions, etc?

Probably the answer is somewhere in-between.

Comments?

IMO Vodacom should not block certain attachments - even if they happen to be viruses/malware - there is a legit case for emailing off a virus - e.g. F-Secure accepts samples of possible virii via email, with a blocking smtp server, one would never be able to email samples to an anti-virus vendor...

Thanks ic, this is the kind of constructive comments that helps building a better solution. I did not even think of this specific angle.
