haha .. nice to see you haven't lost your sense of humour VMS .. perhaps if all your clients fire you, you can make it as a stand up vodacomedian !!

hey .. my offer of an invitation for a gmail account still stands ;)

OK Gypsy....show me the way...what do you need from me to get it started?

VMS

you're lucky you could even send via webmail with the way web sites are timing out this afternoon .. it's crazy .. I can't tell you how much time I have wasted in the last week with smtp problems and slow to practically non-existent internet access. But let me not be negative .. at least I am able to receive mail without any problem (albeit slowly) and at least I can FTP (albeit slowly) so it could be worse!

VMS just PM me your email address and I will send you an invitation and that's all there is to it

I've got something like 50 invites spare. Is it still by invitation only? Anyone need a backup smtp server?

But sjeez, let me get this straight.....The new super duper, dual redundant SMTP server, carried by angels and blessed by the Pope himself screwed up?

OK, some more accurate information.

First the (semi) good news:

The new super duper, dual redundant SMTP server, carried by angels and blessed by the Pope himself, did in fact not fail at all.

Now the not so good news:

IT did however stopped accepting connections as it had a dependency on another backend system, and this system exceeded a set file size and stopped responding, with the result that the SMTP stopped, waiting for this other system to respond.

This would have resulted in two possible scenarios for you:

1) Mail you sent that were in the SMTP servers' queue would have been delayed but will be delivered.

2) At some point you would not have been able to connect to the server anymore as the connection queue increased. Any outgoing mail would have stayed on your client.

Practically you would not have been able to send mail but all mail send will get through.

The file size issue was fixed but the dependency will be removed, in any case, tomorrow morning.

Voda 3G SMTP issues again

I've been having endless troubles with Vodacom's SMTP server the past 2 months. Half the time my email never arrives and the other half it arrives a week late to recipients. Anyone else have the same problem?

I've been using Vodacom's SMTP server for a month now and have had no problems at all. I seem to be the only one who's not having problems with Vodacom 3G... :) But then again, my time might still come.

Agreed Ploempie - never had a complaint of mail going missing. Been using 3G since Feb 2005 with minor hassles and no smtp related issues - the worst was the 2 days the network was down about 6 weeks back. At least it appears there are 2 happy Vodacom customers. Keep up the good work Vodacom!:D

You guys are pretty funny.

I used to be one of the lucky ones (or at least, that's what I thought). But then the 3G monster crept up on me, and now there are gremlins every now and again. Hopefully you guys stay lucky - the technology has to stabilise at some point, and maybe you guys are some of the first to benefit from the beta testing I've been doing the last year or so!

Anyway, agentpt, the SMTP server has given a lot of trouble in recent times. You may recall that it fell over completely not all that long ago, but according to V3G, things have been sorted out. I haven't been trusting the server just yet, so I've been BCC'ing myself on all outgoing messages. So far, after more than 200 messages, I haven't had any issues. Maybe try BCC'ing yourself for a while, just to see where the problem lies - it might not be the Vodacom SMTP at all...

Well, looks like we can't expect the SMTP server to be on all the time:

"
An unknown error has occurred. Account: 'xxx.co.za', Server: 'smtp.vodacom.co.za', Protocol: SMTP, Server Response: '421 Cannot connect to SMTP server 168.210.129.147 (168.210.129.147:25), connect error 10060', Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 421, Error Number: 0x800CCC67"

I need to send urgent emails. But lucky for me today I am at a client's site. The funny thing is that I will send confidential information to their direct competition (my data, not theirs) via their SMTP server. Will just encrypt it with a password (maybe twice).

Must get that gmail thing going.

Been BCC'ing myself sending each mail twice, one through gmail and the other using Thunderbird via smtp.vodacom.co.za

Stats out of 5 mails (Yesterday):
Vodacom : 1 mail within the hour, 2 mails arrived after 24 hours, still waiting for the other two
Gmail: All within 10 minutes

Today I sent a couple and it all went fine. Maybe we can be warned in advance via email if the SMTP servers are giving crap?

Suggestions?

That is a hard one....Vodacom (imho) needs users like us to report these issues (don't flame me yet)

Think about it - Vodacom tests the server every say 15 mins, then something happens in between that time....they don't know about it until the next 15 mins. What if the problem lies with the other server?

As painfull as it sounds, we will just have to keep reporting these :) I will do some tests on the server when I get home :D (see for myself !)

Laterz !!!

Tazz, getting user feedback is always invaluable but it does not release Vodacom from monitoring it's own services, especially one that can be fully monitored such as SMTP.

The problem we saw today was actually a network problem, but telling you the server was up is really academic, you could not send mail.

There will be cases where customer feedback is the only real indication of problems, for example on the radio interface where is very difficult to impossible to monitor the RF link to the handset.

I am glad to see that the SMTP seems to have worked without a problem this month :)

Vodacom is going in the right direction. Congrats guys

The service was definitely better this month, but I have been loathe to post a message like this for fear of jinxing it .. but long may it continue :)

yes .. of course we mean this past month .. the smtp server has been more stable and I am not aware of any sent mail going astray .. I still had problems on occasional days when surfing the web with pages timing out.

Anyone else also having problems with the SMTP server?

The email goes through, eventually, but the upload to the server is slow and stops every few seconds.

VMS

I get this on Outlook Express, where the client pops up the message but it actually goes through.

It seems to be a function of the file size / 64kb/s.

Which client are you using?
