smtp.vodacom.co.za

Perhaps I spoke too soon.

The test email I sent myself an hour ago has arrived at my email provider, but it is flagged as spam as per the criteria in the first post in this thread. If gmx regards it as spam then other email providers will too. So I can now send emails, but they won't actually arrive!

I'm considering creating a DynDNS hostname to be used by ThunderBird as the default smtp server, and whenever an internet connection is established, have some script to update the DynDNS hostname to point to a connection specific smtp server...another possibility is to have a script update the local machine hosts file instead of using DynDNS...Flagged in what way? - what does it show in the email headers?

I used to use a product called Netswitcher, which changes a buch of entries on your Notebook (including the hosts file, default printer/homepage, etc etc) you just select the profile, and it updates all the settings. Works like a charm, but seeing that everything I use is DHCP, I have no need for it really.

So all I did was to create a shortcut on my desktop to the hosts file, with entries for the different smtp servers I use (all pointing to 'mail'). When I boot up, open the hosts file shortcut, and comment/un-comment the relative entries. Yes, it is a manual process, but it works for me :D

Well i didn't originally get to see the header because gmx decided it is spam and put it in my spam folder (That's what I meant by 'flagged as spam'.) So I could only view it on-line. I have since manually "unspammed" it, which put it in my inbox. The next POP check brought it down to Outlook Express, so now I can see the header which is reproduced at the bottom of this post. The penultimate line
X-GMX-Antispam: 4 (From mass domain over foreign mail server)
seems significant.

Maybe gmx is just over-sensitive to spam... send me an email while vodacom is your bearer and let's see if that is classified as spam too...

new problems sending

Hi all, I can't seem to send mail this morning, (my usual settings are 168.210.129.147, which was supplied to this forum some time ago); I've also tried smtp.vodacom.co.za and it fails to send on both...
Just me or or others having a problem?

Got a notification of some intermittent GPRS problems. Not sure if it's also affecting 3G but could be what's affecting you. Will get more info.

I have been fine (but slow on GPRS in the) Drakensberg. Today I get errors. Great for my business.

The message could not be sent because one of the recipients was rejected by the server. The rejected e-mail address was '******@****.co.za'. Subject 'Re: Data files', Account: '*****', Server: 'smtp.vodacom.co.za', Protocol: SMTP, Server Response: '554 <unknown[10.49.203.110]>: Client host rejected: Access denied', Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 554, Error Number: 0x800CCC79

The RFC has it as:

554 Transaction failed

I wonder if they not out of diskspace again or a DNS failure...

V3G ?

Please check if you can send mail again.

(I believe) it was caused by new ip ranges that were added to te network and not included in the authorised IP list, or something like that. Should be sorted now.

Get a gmail account and stop relying on Networks which have 0 or little redundancy etc etc - simple really.

What amazes me about these forums is the complaints - how much more **** needs to happen before you realise we are fooked regardless of who you connect with !

Its not right its just the way it is !

Is it just me????(on 3G in Parktown)

Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible causes for this include server problems, network problems, or a long period of inactivity. Account: '***.****.co.za', Server: 'smtp.vodacom.co.za', Protocol: SMTP, Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 10053, Error Number: 0x800CCC0F

vodacom3g,

You stated to in a email to me that we MUST use smtp.vodacom.co.za on your network.

Why are you forcing us to use it if it's not reliable? Is that fair?

wallace/mc721221: Vodacom's policy (like all ISP's) is to not guarantee that IP's will not be blacklisted. With thousands of IP's on the network and no control what users will use them for, it's impossible to try and keep them from being blacklisted by spammers, scanners, viruses, etc.

Therefore Vodacom provides a smtp relay and this IP is carefully controlled to ensure it does not get blacklisted.

You will remember (when you still posted as mc721221) that we went through a period of blacklistings of smtp.vodacom.co.za till we got the process sorted out.

You can use any IP assigned to you to connect to other smtp servers or even run your own smtp server. Vodacom in no way is stopping anyone from using whatever protocol they like on their PC.

So you are not being forced to use smtp.vodacom.co.za. Rather it's there for your convenience.

smtp.vodacom.co.za has been moved, a few months ago, to a redundant platform and has since been very stable. Today's problem was actually a DNS problem and not a SMTP one. No denying it stopped people from sending mail.

At any given point, less than 0.5% of the Vodacom range is blacklisted, so I'm concerned that you seem to be getting them.

I can't send mail to smtp.vodacom.co.za and can't ping it. Everything else is fine. Sent via backup server.

V3G, remind them that they need to include the vpn ip addresses ...
