I'm sending (via smtp.vodacom.co.za) and receiving POP3 at the moment on both the internet and internetvpn APN's.

What exactly are you seeing?

I was about to post saying that it was fine and decided to do a final test. No dice. Mails have sailed off into the ether.

charming .. I've just done a whole lot of invoicing and sent it off .. well it's gone, but based on the above post, I now can't be sure where it's gone .. so I suppose I better stick to using the dial up for sending important stuff .. (sigh)

Ive been sending mails between different accounts all morning and all have gone through so far. Last test 40 seconds ago.

If you don't trust the system yet, cc or bcc another mail account and check if you see it there. This at least will give you peace of mind in these uncertain times.... :)

Apologies for any panic previous post may have caused. Seems my two tests did arrive, though only about an hour later. Maybe a problem with Mweb pop3?

Email is shooting out as I would expect and I reckon they are reaching their destinations. Now, if only the websites would stop timing out ...

Slak

So far so good on my side as well. Just pinged an email via Vodacom to Mweb POP and it took only a few seconds to get it back.

As for 3G stability: Since 3pm yesterday it suddenly came right. My MSN stays connected and I downloaded an 88mb video file about hurricane Katrina at max speed, without rebooting, reconnecting or tweaking the antenna.

Keep it up guys....keep it up 99.99% :-)

VMS

..hmmm apart from the fact that my connection just disconnected for no reason. hmmmm?

Vodacom 3G or anyone else that knows the answer to this, can you please tell me why you would want to use smtp.vodacom.co.za as your SMTP server?

I currently use my webspace's SMTP dn POP3 settings, and I am going to configure this 3G connection (which is a work connection) to do the same because when the SMTP goes down we fall behind with our head office in Joburg.

Because ISP don't allow SMTP AUTH or relay...

ok, maybe I am very stupid now, but I dont understand what you meen.
I have my website and I use its smtp server, would that be a problem in any way?
How can I tell if it supports what you are talking about.

Soz, but I am confused now =/

I have been able to send mail via smtp.vodacom.co.za since yesterday afternoon, however some of the mail sent yesterday is still floating in the ether somewhere .. so I am still having to resort to using my dial up for important mail like billing and domain registrations etc. When can we start trusting that vodacom is actually delivering the mail? It's so frustrating as the mail doesn't bounce back and let you know that it's gone nowhere, it just disappears.

Basiclly - mail servers don't allow just anyone to send via them. This means that if you are outside of the "allowed" range, you cant send. There is two ways "around" this. Either you extend this range to include your current IP or you enable SMTP AUTH. Extending the ip will work for a fixed env. but doing that on a live server is a bad idea. I can connect via 3G and spam from your mail server then :(

SMTP AUTH is authenticating yourself to the server before sending, pretty much the same as you are doing to post here. This, imho, is the better way since your can id the user sending the email.

Hope this helps :)

yes, because I went and replaced the smtp.vodacom.co.za part with my smtp address and it worked fine, (with the pop addresses username and password) so it never asked for a password... interesting.
It however still says its coming from the actualy pop account in Outlook. I guess Vodacom simply doesnt ask for authentication either

Vodacom doesn't need AUTH, they control both the IP's and the server ;)

My dashboard is saying I used 607.74 mb of my 1 gig cap, but just received an SMS that I have used up the gig, and will now be charged...

This is not good service from Vodacom.
