YEAH!!!! Thank you RPM, MAD and everybody for keeping up the pressure! You guys rock BIG TIME!!! We better not let slip in the meantime and keep it up! We (the public) need freedom to put up wireless networks anywhere we want (within acceptable bounds) and then we need to force legislation forcing competition between the SNO and TELKOM (I HATE THAT NAME!!!!) in order to prevent an already mentioned scenario where they simply agree on pricing ala the CELL PHONE companies.
This SNO better come in with a bang and it better be good or I am going to start burning stuff... []

SNO to be granted licence in two weeks: Minister
It's SNO time!!!!

South Africa's second national operator (SNO) will be granted a licence to provide landline telephone services on September 17, Ivy Matsepe-Casaburri, the communications minister announced this afternoon.
Briefing the media at Parliament, she said the SNO comprised Nexus Connexion Pty, Transtel, Esitel, WIP Investments Nine Pty Ltd (trading as CommuniTel), Two Telecom Consortium Pty Ltd, and the remaining unallocated equity shareholder.
The licence would be granted subject to:
-- acceptance of the shareholding and control structure of the SNO;
-- finalisation of and agreement on the business plan; and
-- finalisation of the shareholders' and subscription agreements.
Regarding the structure of the SNO, Matsepe-Casaburri said a new company -- SepCo -- would be incorporated, which would hold 51% of the equity share capital of the SNO.
Control of SepCo would be held by a new financial investor, which would have a 51% shareholding in SepCo. CommuniTel and Two Telecom Consortium would each hold 24.5%.
Transtel and Esitel would together hold 30% of the equity share capital of the SNO, and Nexus 19%.
The new financial investor would control the board of SepCo, which would in turn control the board of the SNO, she said.
The Independent Communications Authority of SA would now manage the integration of the SNO company and the finalisation of the licensing process.
"I will continue with the process of selecting a suitable investor for the unallocated equity," Matsepe-Casaburri said. - Sapa

out of curiosity, whatever happened to 2 consortium and communitel (I think it was them), and that whole other mess she announced last year (Nexus etc).
Is it the same group but now she allocating shares differently to stop their bickering, or is she giving out a new license alltogether???
as many of you recall, she announced several dates last year, promising to give a verdict by that time, and after much delay, ended up giving one useless solution.
IVY, if you reading this (ja right, we all know she can´t read), stop *****footing around, and make it work this time, and maybe if you´re really nice... you could go down as the person that saved South africas communications .

Okay - so now we end up having 2 bloated fish instead of one.
I can tell you right now that Teklom will kick the new bunch right outta here.

Remember - Legislation has not changed. We still cannot purchase bandwidth ourselves. We still cannot provide certain services ourselves. We are not allowed to run a network cable under/over a street. We are not allowed to make a wireless network with our neighbours. We still are not forcing the network operators to uplift the impoverished. And we are still not holding the government responsible for what they are doing to us.

What can we actually expect from a new Operator in the short-run? They're renting lines from Telkom right...so prices wont be any better?

Theoretically Telkom have to provide the lines at wholesale, in reality however the SNO will mark up to just under Telkom's prices... so no it won't be much better.
I think its a little early to be celebrating dont u? In my experience most politicians are good at talking and thats about it. Lets wait and see what happens. According to Moneyweb, Government will be warehousing a 25% stake. Hah! whats new, either way your hard earned money will still be financing that new 4x4 somewhere.
Oh and btw Telkom's shares are doin pretty well. U wanna hedge against this legalised robbery buy some of their shares. Prolly make enough to pay for ure monthly bill.. bwhaha.. err maybe not.
