SNO feels threatened

they wanted to be the only one to compete with telkom? is that what they are saying?
 
In its submission to the parliamentary portfolio committee on communications, which started hearing oral submissions from the industry on Tuesday, the SNO shareholders said it seemed the Convergence Bill would allow service providers to also become infrastructure providers and vice versa. This would effectively bring more facilities-based competition into the market earlier than had been proposed under the plan of managed liberalisation – gradually phased in opening up – of the telecoms sector.

and so it should feel threatened....it doesn't take a rocket scientist to see that Telkom have extracted themselves from the "undesirable" areas as far as infrastructure and service arre concerned. Of course the government are going to put pressure on the SNO and Telkom to deliver - telkom will say they already have a huge market penetration and of course, the poor old SNO will be forced to cover this market in isolation. Telkom have already said these areas are not financially desirable (non payment, bad debt, cable theft, security risks) so they are effectively killing the competition before the competition can get its head out the door.

Additionally, telkom will install infrastructure that the SNO will have to lease or maintain at the very least. Once again, telkom will have the death grip as they can then structure their lease agreements and lease prices to price the competition out of the water.

The whole bloody situation stinks.

WE HAVE TO FORCE DEREGULATION NOW OR FOREVER SUFFER THE CONSEQUENCES
 
mostly fair comment re the provisions of the convergence bill - the ministerial control on the issue of individual licenses for infrastructure provisions (communications network servcies) in that she has to approve license terms and conditions and she once again has the "until a date to be determined by notice in the govt gazette" bs to fall back on. this last is in there precisely because of the promises made to the SNO (and Sentech) about the basis on which they would enter the market. in other words we are moving from a fictitious (through regulation) monopoly to a fictitious (through regulation) duopoly. From a non-consumer perspective this is what the DoC is contractually bound to do - it was the basis on which the license was bid for in the first place.

the ministerial discretion (bleeeugh) is the instrument for fundamental regulation and mythical managed liberalisation....they will let the SNO root around in the pigpen for a year or two and then reassess the situation as regards infrastructure provision

of course this is largely the same logic that won the day in 1996 and the extended period of exclusivity for teklom embodied in the telecomms act and the policy of the time. as well-intentioned as it may have been it has been a complete and utter disaster, esp insofar as the primary goal of policy at this stage has to be universal access...we are not going to get there through this charade of protectionism and unmitigated pandering to capitalist concerns

the sno are really moaning about the fact that the whole licensing process has taken so long that the original window of opportunity for them is practically shut

The point no one want to stand behind, "Telkom does not own any of their equipment, it was government owned and they got it eventually practicly for free"

It was a smooth move and they have been on a winning streak ever since. Copper cables for instance should be government regulated(as it is you and me) who own/paid for that with our tax money.

Then the government can decide(someone with intellect) who to give licenses too and the use of the copper infrastructure.

When Ivy ****s off, and Pete the Plank sits on her throne, we will see positive change as his priorities are in order.

However - I do not think Ivy is suitable for the job, not in the least. She's done ****all for this country.
 
Are SNO justified in their complaints?

Well - I would never ever spend a sent on that kind of organisation when I dont know:
1 - Where and How I may lay down infrastructure.
2 - What frequencies/spectrums/areas I am allowed to operate in.
3 - Exactly which service area's I am allowed to operate in.
4 - Exactly which competition I face, and the nature of that competition.
5 - Governmint legislation and the country's long-term plans (Written) for TeleComs.

i.e. How in the heck can you build a business plan from scraps. The terms and conditions of the licence are not even known, never mind the liegislative nightmare that governmint is creating.

If I was SNO, i'd handbrake and then reverse.

hmm.. I typed a whole long rant, then changed my mind! Suffice to say this whole scenario makes me feel like I did on the few occasions I had green fever.

I just wish Ivy had the maturity to realise all of this and actually "do something".
 
She's as useful as a waterproof spong man. Gov doesnt care cos she's ensuring lotsa bucks for them.

Like Thabo said a couple days ago - "SA is a Capitalist country". It shouldnt be though.
 
Well at least they are doing something :D (the SNO)

I havn't seen anything on them getting anywhere - where their is progress their is hope! :D

It sells lots of produce and is the only store in town. Who wouldn't want a piece of that action?
 
The minister should be strung up in public and flayed like the MEC for Social Welfare in KZN.

Stupid fscking cow. Then we'll see who dominates a market. People looking like her? Yeah right.
 
I don't feel that strongly about her Ivyness, apart from high prices & devolution resulting from her mismanagement of Telecoms, her Ivyness means nothing else to me, just someone that will appear somewhere in a history book as being the worst Minister of Communication of any country on the face of the Earth.

In my mind, she has been sidelined already...
