I still don't understand why they don't want to compete. They could have tried so much harder, got a viable way of bypassing Telkom infrastructure where it's expensive and completely undercut them. Would have been swell.
 
Maybe the "critical milestone" will actually be giving themselves a name apart from SNOT
 
Indeed, they should have one up on Telkom, as they start with all the new technologies, and have to replace a country full of old(ish) equipment. New technology is cheaper in the sense that you can do more with less, compared to a few years ago. If they plan their backbone correctly, they should be well positioned to provide cheap(ish) connectivity.
 
If their customer service is better than Telkom's (which it probably will be), I personally wouldn't care if they are more expensive.
 
I wait with bated breath will this spell change for the consumer, how will Telkom respond, oh the questions and the drama.

No probably just the fat cats sipping some champers with Papi, shouting who wants competition lets rape this country!!!

They wont be more expensive... know this for a fact..No1 would join if theyre more expensive
 
They won't be more expensive wrt running cost so its just a matter of how fast they want their returns on infrastructure cost. I can't wait to see how they getting their international connectivity cause they keep saying they gonna offer it and brag about tata's world network but if its going thru telkom i don't see it much cheaper. Hey I wonder how many isp's will now move over to the new provider.

Yeah - blame Telkom for my pessimism, but it sounds like just another big party to make everyone feel good. Start offerering some service already. The only milestone I care about is when all the promises for cheaper connectivity starts becoming a reality.
 
anyone else noticed how ICASA stated that, they would let the "competition" decide the prices, the so called competition doesnt even want a price war... now what?
 
Good luck to them, I'm sure they'll get a lot of support just by being not-Telkom.

But puhleeze SNO, find a real name.
 
Their website REALLY needs some work. The front page still says "SNO wholesale services will initially include international voice transit and point-to-point leased lines (national and international). Launching in 2nd Quarter 2006"

I hope this isn't an indication of the type of service we can expect from SNOT.

I think extremes will be good for SA competition. I mean, if SNO enters and gains the expected level of market share, they would be doing exactly what they want and thus won't enter into a price war.
If SNO enters and does very poorly they will be forced to do something drastic like significantly under cutting Telkom. On the other hand, if SNO does really really well, far better than their projected profits, Telkom might be forced to do something as well.

So I guess (in my own private and naturally professsional opinion) we should either all change together or not at all.

Give us another 600 years or so and we'll see affordable broadband in SA, can't wait !!!

ps note to myself - must take vitamins in order to live 600 years
