Snow Leopard pricing in SA revealed

So, as a new Mac owner (who bought a second hand Mac), what do I need to do to get this upgrade pricing?

depends on how old your mac is?
if you bought a g5 based mac you wont be able to upgrade as leopard is intel only.
otherwise it should be the same as upgrading any other bit of software.

Not really dude, microsoft make money off OS's not the sale of expensive hardware, if microsoft charged what apple do for computers maybe they would also be this cheap :D

weirdly enough I did a comparison a few months ago before upgrading between the local dell site and the macbooks. if you spec the dells at the same level(or similar) as the macbooks they are actually more expensive. i think what most ppl miss is that macbooks use the best hardware for example 2gigs of ddr2 ram is way cheaper than the ddr3 ram macbooks use. the processors and graphics cards too. and the macbook battery jus beats all other brands.

sadly it is a lot cheaper if you buy a standard laptop from a reseller and i ended up with an hp... but definitely gettin a macbook pro from hong kong yr end, its dirt cheap there...

Also remember that a normal lappie has pretty much zero resale value, a mac on the other hand has a very good re sale value.

I think the point he was trying to make was that since microsoft doesnt produce the hardware they need to produce regular software "upgrades" (after vista I use that term loosely) to exploit their users and remain profitable.

Try the iStore on sandton drive, that is where I will be going.

Just spoke to someone there and they said although launch is tomorrow they wont have stock for a few weeks.

It is possible, however, that they don't inform their employees about what is happening.

Sigh, isn't this just typical.

Argh - so which stores can confirm stock for tomorrow?

Yup I'm upgrading my macbook at that price, prices should drop even more after a few weeks.

Wouldnt it be false advertising if this guy said its gonna be out tomorrow and then it only comes out in a few weeks?

I'm running Tiger. I wonder how much the boxed Snow Leopard will be locally?

R1799 if you phone Core online shop (ZAStore), it's not on their website yet.

What stops someone from using the SL upgrade dvd to perform a fresh install on a Mac that you wiped Tiger off the the HD first?
Please don't tell me you need Leopard installed as this means everytime you do an install you would have to do two installs?

Yeah, Engadget proved you can install from the pre-release SL dvd... I'm after a family pack - got 3 macs to upgrade! So that should be R559?

I went to speak to DigiCape in Cape Town. They said that their supplier (I assume Core) is not saying much but they hope that they will have copies tomorrow but they can not confirm...

I think they pretty much rely on the honour system. It would seem confusing to a windows user but I dont recall ever being prompted for a serial number for any OSX installation.

I think it shows that people are willing to pay for quality.

Hi guys,

This article was based on comment from a Core representative, who said that it would be at premium resellers, provided the shipment arrived on time.

Core's offices are at 1 Sandton Drive, next to a premium iStore. If I were upgrading that would certainly be the first place I would try.

Good luck.
