snowy picture on dstv

so my dstv decoder crashed on sat, (iirc error 8114), so i took to MC in randburg and decided to rather get a new decorder, so now i have a small dsd1131 (which actually looks crap) but after plugging in, i now have a snowy dstv picture.

i changed the uhf setting etc, even fined tuned but it still snowy. they did test my decorder at MC and it worked perfectly.

so my questions, 1) the frequency on the decorder is always ###.25mhz and my just has has ###mhz (no option for a decimal), can i change a setting on the decoder so that i work on a frequency with a decimal

2) or is my cable from the dish to the decoder at fault for this error

3) what else can i try before getting someone else to check it out

1. Connect the Video out (yellow plug composite) cable, if it is fuzzy then there is something wrong with the decoder. This is the best way to connect the decoder.

2. Cable to the dish will never create a fuzzy picture since the signal is digital.

...i am currently not using the video cables, i am using RF in/out (sorry my cable knowledge is low). so what i must try, if i have this correct, is connect the cable from dish as per normal to the decoder, then connect the dish to the tv via the yellow, read and white cables? and nothing else?

yes use the yellow for video and Red and white for audio, on your RF cable did you by any chance connect the rf incorectly like use the RF in instead of the RF out?
also the connecters might be different, if you had one of the older dstv decoders before, they had male and female connecters and the newer decoders have those new f-type conectors

dunno, i'll have to check - but yes, the connector cables are still old ones, with male and female, but i got adapters (of which one was broken when i opened it), so i doubt i could have connected them incorrectly.

but if i use the colour cables, i can ignore the rf cables, right?

correct and the picture will be much more clear, and sound will be in stereo, if the picture is still snowy then that means the decoder is messed up

k, got my decoder fixed...the rf adapters that mc gave me were dodgy, so i replaced 'em with some spares i had....

....will do the colour cable swap for the rf connection tonight and see how that works

i have the new small decoder (that crappy looking one) and yeah the quality is cr@p, i think the older one were better. but to be honest dstv signal quality aint the best either i mean just look at channel 325 for instance, it looks cr@ppy on my decoder and STILL looks crappy on my friends PVR.

i've also got that dumb small one, dsd1131 - if i knew it would look like this, i would have rather said to fix my old one...

...i doubt i can take it back, get a refund (for the difference) and get my old fixed

I got myself one of those, i re-aligned my dish and the picture is superb. signal quality between 80% and 100%. 60cm dish.

the quality is the same imo, it just looks all dinky

my signal stays between 86-88% (well the few times that i've checked)

sigh i can't even re-align my dish (it's a communal dish) hopefully it works well with ODM when it's released.

remember ODM are suggesting an 80cm dish and since you using a communal dish you'll have to fork out bout =_ R500 for it to point it at the satellite they broadcast from.
