SNR low - is this a bad thing

I logged into my clientzone today and did a line test.

I see that the SNR at my location is 5.8. Apparently below 6 is not good. Is there a way to rectify this??

If i'm not mistaken, if you ask them to drop your line speed one profile down (a megabit) then this should improve that number as your noise margin will increase, and thus increase SNR and result in an overall more stable line.

If the cable going in to your modem is too long, sometimes this can negatively affect this number too, but most of the time this is not the case.

I did exactly that and the SNR changed to 11. I assume that is pretty good.

I would typically recommend SNR margins of 10dB or higher, otherwise the ADSL connection could be unstable. 6dB is the bare minimum to connect.

Typically the downstream SNR margin would increase 3dB for each 1Mbps that you decrease your downstream speed by.

If your line is stable on 10Mb with that SNR it's not an issue.

Me too, i've seen Noise Margins var greatly from time to time, and I seem to notice it's affected bu the weather too. If you want a rock solid line I'll also probably recommend it at at least 10.

Depends what you're currently on. You'll probably manage 10Mb though imo.

Well if what Pada says is right, +3dB gain for every 1Mb dropped, then if you sync at 10Mb from 4Mb your Noise Margin will then be:

21.5db - (6*3db) = 3.5db..... which isn't gonna cut it..

8Mb would probably be the best option in your case, but try it and see.

Attenuation is decent, almost half of mine and I can sync at 6Mb with a +-9dB Noise Margin, but I keep it at 5Mb for stability.
