This has not yet been confirmed in details...but my understanding is that your phone will still remain on the 3G network...but it will be throttled down to the lower level. So you wont actually be on EDGE. I just used the EDGE as a example of a speed you might be throttled down to. If this is the case...then you should see much higher speed if the throttling is done as I think it will. I am just speculating here but that is how I think its going to work.

And remember...it is not to say you will even be affected by the throttling unless you have been monitoring your data usage and know for a fact that you go over 100mb of BIS data every month.
 
how can i check the data usage i've used on my blackberry in south africa , on vodacom?

With a 100MB usage limit hanging over the head of Vodacom’s BlackBerry users, many people have asked for an easy way to track their monthly usage to ensure that they are not throttled.

Vodacom currently does not have an easy way to check BlackBerry BIS data usage, but the company said that there is an application on the Vodacom App Store, called “Data Monitor”, which can be used to monitor data usage on a BlackBerry device.

This application should assist users to see whether they will be affected by Vodacom’s new throttling threshold.

Half way through the day and I haven't downloaded anything today except for a few PDF documents and did about 30 mins browsing on the PlayBook via the Bridge Browser and I have already consumed 22MB's of data. Does that constitute abuse?

I'm sorry, Vodacom have set their threshhold toooooo low. Why don't they introduce tiered BIS data plans instead? Where consumers get to choose their throttle limit. I don't mind paying for my usage...

Another thing is that I have been experiencing slow speeds for some time now and I can only assume that I have been running on 2G and I don't get speeds in excess of 10kb/s... That is slower than dial up.

Twice if not thrice the speed of dial-up actually. 56KBps =/= 56Kb/s
On Dial up on the best of days I got 5kb/s whereas average was more like 3.5kb/s

Anyways the idea is that those slow speeds will vanish.

Huh? It's exactly the same thing, the difference is you've replaced the p with a /.

I think what you mean to say is that 56Kbps =/= 56KBps.
 
I downloaded the Data Monitor app from the vodacom site. Within 20 minutes it alerted me that I have reached my daily limit (3.271Mb). This from VIEWING twitter feeds, a couple of mobile pages and playing Dark Galaxy.
 
I tried Tweeting my angry emotions to vodacom and they gave me half thought answers back, then i realized i should STOP tweeting them if i didnt want to go over my 100MB speed cap :sick:
 
I got the budget 8520. My phone has no 3G. They will throttle the speed from 3G to 2G once 100MBs is reached. I only have 2G. Thus, nothing changes for me :)
 
LOL! does not affect me, my BB is off more than half the month. No harm done here.
