So I was given an old Merc

Just sell the damn thing man it's old and thirsty...

I'll give you R 31 000

:D

They are very prized as collector vehicles. Not sure about the models that fetch a pretty penny, but people like the shape similar to how people jizz their pants at a nice E30 BMW these days. Hang on to it for a couple of years. Or maybe make it look pretty again:

That looks more than a 190 than an older c class.

Definitely wouldn't sell that tbh, I'd keep it as a second runabout.. it will be bulletproof reliable...

That is a nice car. That shape is timeless.

Nice looking cab, I'd keep it for cruising.

Yeah, Im thinking of keeping it. Mechanically its perfectly sound. Starts without struggling. Engine purrs. Ill take it in for a service and hope that sorts out the fuel issue. Ive never seen my petrol go down so fast, but in its defence, it doesnt seem to have a big fuel tank cause R200 gets it to half way.

Also, why is there a red bar between 50-60km per hour on the speedo. is that to help guide you to stay in the speed limit or something?

It's a German thing of the 80/90's. Indicate national speed limits or something as such.
I remember that my Jetta Cli also had a mark between 50/60 kph.

Merc looks nice, the right person will pay way more than R30k for that ride.
If you sell, make your price and stick to it. It will sell after a while

It should be a 62l tank. I think the gauge isn't exactly linear, full to 3/4 takes a lot longer than 1/2 to 1/4.

I've seen this thread before. Only I thought it was a Monza???

:p

My Mom had a C180 in that shape for the longest time.

The aircon is controlled by the sliding switches with blue to red strip lines, next to the fan speed and direction dial. If you slide those all the way to the maximum blue, you'll feel a click. With the click the aircon stays on, without the click the aircon is off.

R35,000 cash money, will collect this weekend.

Thanks, but no thanks :D Will try out the click thing when I fetch my wife later. This doesnt take some super priority merc AC gas or something? How much is a refill?

Not sure unfortunately, my Mom's aircon ran faultlessly from 1997 until we sold it in 2014. Maybe consult with your local "guy with a sign next to the road".

Air cons are a closed system so they shouldn't run out of gas, if the aircon isn't working it might have a leak, the compressor could be popped etc, you'd need to take it to an aircon place not some chop on the side of the road.
To turn the aircon on you should leave the EC button off :) kind of counter intuitive methinks

VWs have an Econ button. My mate at the dealership tells the story of the dude who bought one and complained like hell that the aircon never worked despite him pushing the Econ button on.

I can imagine the confusion :)
