The fuel gauge on those C-Classes definitely seems to not be proportional - the last half of the gauge is more like a third, which is why R200 gets you to half. Also, Mercs generally have a huge reserve so even after the gauge hits empty there's still a fair amount of fuel in it (but don't rely on this!).

But it is a Merc and would it really make sense to buy a new car for R100k++ to save a few thousand rand on petrol a year in a fully paid up car that goes perfectly well??

It's just Merc's quirky philosphy that the aircon should always be on by default and you should have a button to switch it off.

The aircon is still technically on when you do that - that just moves the thermostat to the point where it doesn't kick in.
 
I have driven with someone in his one which was the same model and shape, it had 750k on the clock at that stage and that was already a few years ago. Unless you are really hard up for cash, you should not let this car go, this car should actually appreciate in value. If you think the consumption is a bit high, you save on the depreciation that a new more economical car would have.

I'm not entirely sure, that's what the click is for, a switch to turn the AC system on. It was very audible between switching the system on or off, the compressor never kicked in before you clicked it on.
 
On the upside, I was reading its service history log book and its never missed a service. With its last one in 2014.
 
Yeah, that motor has bearly run in at 100 000km.
I would keep it.

Lovely car! It was the first Mercedes my parents bought. I see that is also the classic trim? No headrest in the rear I suppose and no ambient temperature display?

This is the one we had, really miss the car, sorry to hijack your thread but the W202 C220 is a car that is close to my heart.

As to the question about the click at the bottom of the temperature dials...

The click actually switches on recirculation mode - which is why you hear a change in the sound.
The aircon compressor runs as needed based on the temp you set on the dials, I normally leave mine on the "white" setting, it's comfortable. If you press the EC button, the aircon will then not run.
 
keep it - I bought a 2009 C200 Kompressor elegance - in mint show room condition with full service history from a mate of mine with 79000km on the clock. belonged to his wife. damn it's awesome to drive - like a magic carpet ride :love:

Lovely. My FIL got one exactly like that in 2014. Beautiful tan seats dash and steering.

But. Was it ever car of they year? If so, it's probably got a value of around R300 - R400k. Based on a conservative estimate of course.
