So I went to Capitec

They can’t cancel the mandatory credit card credit insurance anymore. Only bank I know that charges it.

That socks for potential new applicants. If they force insurance onto my existing credit card, I will be looking for a new credit card straight away.

“When we do that well we have found that the high-income segment have started to find it appealing that we offer services that are simpler and significantly cheaper than what the traditional banks charge when you’re on a private banking account.

“There is also part of the market that is starting to be disillusioned about the allure of private banking.”

Howsit! Can anyone confirm if the R2 international processing fee is still there when making 'international' purchases or swipes?
Might consider moving back to capitec after shifting to Tyme (as they have no international processing fees)

No it's only removed for physical card purchases overseas. Also Tymebank charges a 2% currency conversion fee so you're wrong about that last bit.

You tend to use Apple Pay more abroad than your card these days. In China its WechatPay (which now only supports local Chinese Bank cards) and Alipay (which support out cards), but its limited.

Nedbank is better, I dont mind the low fees. Some providers bundle the fees together. ie trains

But honestly the Visa benefits, the lounge accesses etc will wipe out the few bucks you spend on the card. Also you can prebook your hotels and get discount which Capitec doesnt give you. ie 15% on Agoda, 10% on Booking.com, 15% on IHG etc.

Also its cheaper just to draw the local currency via an atm abroad then to buy foreign currency locally.

Mastercard honestly sucks for foreign travel. They have no real benefits. And both Standard Bank and Capitec uses them predominantly.

And while you're sitting in here....

I will be here

And that's where the difference comes in. What benefit will the lower charge be if you're giving up all the better benefits? Sure you can pay 900 for 1 lounge access, but that would wipe out your purchase discount.

Thanks.
New pricing removes conversion fees. I've tested personally.

Kept a positive balance on the CC for most of the month and wasn’t charged it this month. Nice one.

jirre, looooong time relatively happy customer of Capitec, but anyone else also been struggling with getting them to provide decent support?

I have an open query from 2025-11-11 that I escalated to their complaints team on 2025-12-17 with absolutely no response, just logged it with the banking ombudsman

as luck would have it, recently also noticed they have not paid any interest into my TFSA account since November, here's the stellar whatsapp service line in all its glory, took 33min before a human responded:

Never use Whatsapp support from any company. Whatsapp is cancer.
well for my unresolved query that is now with the ombud I've tried:
- whatsapp support multiple times
- phoning multiple times
- been to the branch, pushed the consultant to talk to the branch manager and the relevant department
- emailed multiple times
- escalated to their complaints department via email (there's no other option for this)

and ... F-ALL

you're not wrong though, for this latest one the whatsapp minion looked at my issue for all of 2 minutes before saying "go to the branch" ... FFS

Finally can add my virtual credit card to my Apple wallet. Madness it took so long.

Capitec Credit Card: I got a pre-approval on their App and chose to complete in branch with my documents.

I only want to pay the R50 monthly fee and the once off initiation fee. What do I need to do in the branch to make sure they don't charge me the balance protection fees - can I avoid those and how?
