A month ago I was cut off going around a corner by a moron who was going to fast and as he came past me over corrected and cut me off. I slammed on brakes and the car went sliding clipped an embankment and it rolled. So anyway due to the cars age (14years) and high kilos (424000km) and excess I will only get out R40k. I was retrenched last year during Covid and at the moment I am getting by on part time work so am living from wage to wage so I cannot finance anything.

I have been scouring the classifieds and there really isn't much out there for R40k. Some look like good deals and by the time I call which is a few hours after someone posts the car is sold already. Then there are 20-30 year old heaps that people think are worth a fortune because they think their cars are some sort of legend because it has some crappy aftermarket sports steering wheel.

You’re getting a lot for that piece of junk.

How dare you speak of the beloved Opel Monza GSi COTY like that.

Sucks to hear dude... sorry :(

Yeah, R40k is gonna be a stretch to find a decent car that you can trust currently, but keep hunting and you will find something that will work for you, but you will have to make some compromises unfortunately.

I've heard from a friend of mine in the motor industry that prices on second hand cars have gone through the roof. Apparently larger dealerships are buying cars for above what would have previously been considered retail.

Covid is driving this as the new car sales are at a 20 year low so you don't have so you have a lot of people who are hanging onto their new cars - not providing more cars to the 2nd hand market. Lots of people have lost their jobs / lost part of their income and have been downscaling their cars. Also, all the people working from home, not using their cars daily, means they can downscale.
All of this means there is excess demand at the bottom end of the market and not enough supply leading to excessive prices.

Now is not the best time to be looking for cheap 2nd hand cars.

Maybe if there is someone on here from the motor trade, they can confirm this.

Unfortunately R40k will not get you much car these days.

Best way to get a bargain these days is through private sales from people you know.

Well that piece of junk was doing fine. Everything on it still worked. Electric windows and the aircon and it used about a pint of oil between oil changes.
