So should I get 8ta's 10GB data contract offer?

I am considering getting 8ta's 10GB monthly data for R200. When I first heard of it I thought it was too good to be true. I went to their shop to find out more and I realized that their fastest speed is a 3G connection. It would have been better if they offered an HSDPA connection. Funny thing is that one of the ladies working there at 8ta's Centurion Mall branch didn't even know that there's a fast connection called HSDPA. I am using Vodacom's modem and I buy my data bundles once-off every month. I spend R389 a month for 2.3GB worth of data. I like my current speed and strongly dislike slow internet connections, so I don't think 3G will work for me. I think 3G is slow?
 
Er, this isn't true. HSDPA is 3G (well, 3.5G technically). 8ta offer up to 21.1mbps (HSPA+) or 3.75G. I really don't know where you got your info from. Perhaps a clueless salesperson. If this was 3G only (i.e. UMTS) it really wouldn't be a very attractive deal.
 
Stay away from ANYTHING Telkom related and you will be doing yourself a huge favor.
 
If you decide you do want it, DO NOT RELY ON THEIR COVERAGE MAP. It said I'm covered, but I bought a 8ta prepaid sim to test it and I never picked up a 8ta signal - only MTN Roaming even outside. FYI, I'm in Joburg Northern Suburbs, get a excellent Cell C HSDPA signal, good MTN HSDPA signal and fair Red Scum 3G signal
 
Check other threads on this forum, people are getting very good speeds.

With a prepaid sim you have to manually select 8ta network.

I'm just outside coverage area yet I get perfect signal and speeds of up to 6mb/s on a standard 7.2mb/s modem , telkom might be up to nonsense sometimes but 8ta certainly is moving in the right direction ... Don't believe the naysayers, try it out for yourself, just get a prepaid sim and test it out.

If you really want it just do some more research. My brother also tried to test with 8ta prepaid, but only got MTN signal, until he got the 10Gb promo. He now has great signal, and gets good speeds.

Now I'm not saying you will have 8ta signal..., but don't shoot it off just because it didn't work with prepaid. Rather go and speak to someone at your local 8ta shop. They have a more accurate coverage map.

While I am the first to agree that you should stay away from 24 month internet contracts in SA, I must say it is hard to believe that in 2 years time R199pm for 10GB will be beaten.

Maybe towards the end of the contract that price will become normal, but there is almost no way that it will be "expensive" compared to what is available at the time.

I wish I could sign the contract for 5 years.

Got one 8ta contract, loving it, and definitely getting another one before the end of the month. :)

Tried to manually select the network. Their network doesn't even show up.

I would never trust the telkom/8ta stores. The 8ta coverage map is terrible. All they seemed to have done is add a layer of a huge selected area on Google Maps. At least Neotel had an accurate map where they said you would have prime/lite/no coverage. I pity the fool who signed up for the 24 month contract then didn't have coverage even though the 8ta coverage map says he does.

8ta's in-house coverage tool is far more accurate than the one on the web. As to the "fool" - said fool would be fully refunded without an admin charge if that scenario was true.

True, but that won't matter to the "fool", now will it? Don't get me wrong I appreciate 8ta's offer. It's a great deal and good for the consumer. I really wanted to ditch 384 adsl. The point is their coverage map could/should be better.
